The"wholeclass"teachinghasprovenpopularandeffectiveinChina.InChineseprimaryschools,pupilssitinrowsofdesksfacingtheteacherandblackboard.Videosshowedthatteachersinteractedwiththewholeclass72percentofthetimeinChineseclassrooms,comparedwithonly25percentinEngland.

ResearchshowsthatchildreninChinascoreupto30percenthigherinmaththanBritishpupilsofthesameage.

AsShanghai'spupilshavebeenthetopperformersintheProgramforInternationalStudentAssessmentorganizedbytheOrganizationforEconomicCooperationandDevelopment,sixtyofChina'stopmathteachersfromShanghaiwereinvitedtoselectedBritishschoolstosharetheirskillsinabidtoliftstandardsinBritainthisSeptember,whilesomeBritishteachersflewtoShanghaitostudyteachingmethodsinChina.
