最近读到关于哈维·韦恩斯坦(HarveyWeinstein)数十年来性侵女性的指控时,我觉得——呃,他当然是这样的。

m.In2007,hepresentedaCrystalAward—givenbyWomeninFilm—toRenéeZellweger,astarofMiramaxtitleslike“Chicago.”GiventherevelationsaboutMr.Weinstein,itmayseemsurprisingthathiscompaniesalsoofferedactualopportunitiesforwomen,includingdirectorslikeJaneCampion(“ThePiano”)andolderactresseslikeJudiDench(“ShakespeareinLove”).Thiswasn’tprogressive;itwasevidenceofashrewdembraceofold-studio-styleproductdiversification.Insomeways,itisbecauseMr.Weinsteinandhisbrother,BobWeinstein,releaseddifferentkindsofmoviesanddidn’tpouralltheirresourcesonlyintoformulas—andmale-drivensuperheromovies—thattheygavewomenopportunities.JenniKonner,theco-showrunnerfortheHBOseries“Girls,”hassaidthattherevelationsaboutMr.Weinsteinareatippingpoint:
“Thisisthemomentwelookbackonandsay,‘That’swhenitallstartedtochange.’”Ihopeshe’sright.Oneproblemisthattheentertainmentindustryisextraordinarilyforgivingofthosewhohavemadeitalotofmoney,asMelGibsoncantellyou.Itmightglanceatthefallencomradeonthefloor,butonlysoitcanstepoverthebodyenroutetothenextmeeting.Andifthatcomradesomehowgetsonhisfeetagain,theindustrywillaskifhehasanewproject.Thisforgivenessisoftenascribedtothefamiliarlinethattheonlythingthebusinesscaresaboutismoney.Moneyoftenservesasarationaleforsomeoftheindustry’s
