Dictionariescansometimesgetover1,000newwordsperyear.In2019theMerriam﹣Websteraddedover600inAprilandanother500+inSeptember.Afterlexicographersdecidewhichwordswillbeincluded,theywriteanewdefinition.Someexistingwordsalsogainadditionalmeanings,andthereareusuallythousandsofrevisions.Thedictionaryisaconstantlychangingwork﹣in﹣progress,justlikethelanguageitdescribesanddefines.Forinstance,theword"peak"recentlywentfrombeingjustasharp,pointedendtoalsobeingsomethingattheheightofpopularity.Occasionallyfakewordsactuallyendupinthedictionarybymistake.
