mountains,steepgrades,wetlands,rivers,desertsandplains.Variablesincludedtheslopeoftheland,theabilityofthepavementtosupporttheload.Innovative,designsofroadways,tunnels,bridges,overpasses,andinterchangesthatcouldrunthroughorbypassurbanareassoonbegantoweavetheirwayacrossthecountry,foreveralteringthefaceofAmerican.

   Long-span,segmented-concrete,cable-stayedbridgessuchasHaleBoggsinLouisianaandtheSunshineSkywayinFlorida,andremarkabletunnelslikeFortMchenryinMarylandandMr.bakerinWashingtondevelopedunderthenation'sphysicalchallenges,Trafficcontrolsystemsandmethodsofconstructiondevelopedundertheinterstateprogramsooninfluencedhighwayconstructionaroundtheworld,andwereinvaluableinimprovingtheconditionofurbanstreetsandtrafficpatterns.

   TodaytheinterstatesystemlinkseverymajorcityintheU.S,andtheU.SwithCanadaandMexico.Builtwithsafetyinmindthehighwayshavewidelanesandshoulders,dividingmedians,orbarriers,longentryandexitlanes,ourengineeredforsafeturns,andlimitedaccess.ThedeathrateonhighwaysishalfthatofallotherU.Sroads(0.86deathsper100millionpassengermilescomparedto1.99deathsper100milliononallotherroads)

   ByopeningtheNorthAmericancontinent,highwayshaveenabledconsumergoodsandservicestoreachpeopleinremoteandruralareasofjobs,accesstothegrowthoptionsintermsofjobsaccesstoculturalprogramshealthcare,andotherbenefits.Aboveall,theinterstatesystemprovidesindividualswithwhattheyenrichmost:

personalfreedomofmobility.

   Theinterstatesystemhasbeenanessentialelementofthenation'seconomicgrowthintermsofshippingandjobcreation:

morethan75percentofthenation'sfreightdeliveriesarrivebytruck.Andmostproductsthatarrivebyrailorairuseinterstatesforthelastlegofthejourneybyvehicle.

NotonlyhasthehighwaysystemaffectedtheAmericaneconomybyprovidingshippingroutes,ithasledtothegrowthofspin-offindustrieslikeservicestations,motels,restaurants,andshoppingcenters.Ithasallowedtherelocationofmanufacturingplantsandotherindustriesfromurbanareastorural.

   Bytheendofthecenturytherewasanimmensenetworkofpavedroads,residentialstreets,expressways,andfreewaysbuilttosupportmillionsofvehicles.ThehighwaysystemwasofficiallyrenamedforEisenhowertohonorhisvisionandleadership.Theyearconstructionbeganhesaid:

"Together,theunitedforcesofourcommunicationandtransportationsystemsaredynamicelementsintheverynamewebear-UnitedStates.Withoutthem,wewouldbeamereallianceofmanyseparateparts."
