“Yourcheatingconductinsellingagreatamountofuselessequipmentsimplyforhugeprofitpromotedafalsesenseofsecurityandinallprobabilitymateriallycontributedtocausingdeathandinjurytoinnocentpeople,”JudgeRichardHonetoldMcCormick.“Youhaveneitherregret,norshame,noranysenseofguilt.”

Thedetectors,soldforupto$42,000each,weresaidtobeabletofindsuchdangerousobjectsasbombsunderwaterandfromtheair.Butinfactthey“lackedanygroundinginscience”andwereofnouse.

McCormickhadtoldthecourtthathesoldhisdetectorstothepoliceinKenya,theprisonserviceinHongKong,thearmyinEgyptandthebordercontrolinThailand.

ArttoSavetheSea”.TheWashedAshoreproject,ledbyartistAngelaHaseltinePozzi,workstoraiseawarenessabouttheproblemofplasticpollutioninEarth’soceans.

Morethan315billionpoundsofplasticlittertheworld’soceanstoday.Mostoftheplasticisgarbagefromtownsandcities,aswellastrashthatpeopleleaveonbeaches.rainwater,winds,andhightidesbringthetrashintotheoceanorintoriversthatleadtotheocean.Onceitisunderthewaves,theplasticbeginstobreakupintosmallerandsmallerpieces.Itoftencollectsinspotscalledgarbagepatches,whichspreadoverlargeareasoftheocean.

Thousandsofmarineanimals--includingwhales,seaturtles,andfish--dieeachyearfromeatingorgettingstuckinplasticbagsandotheritems.Plasticpiecescanalsoinjurecoralandkillseagrass.

WashedAshoreandotherorganizationsareworkingtostopthatfromhappening.Since2010,WashedAshorevolunteershavecollected38,000poundsofplastictrashfrommorethan3000milesofbeaches.TheyhelpedPozzicreatemorethan60sculpturesofmarinecreaturesthatwereharmedbyplasticpollution.

TheartworksondisplayattheNationalZooincludea20-foot-longcoralreef,a12-foot-longshark,anda16-foot-longparrotfish.Eachoneismadefromhundredsofpiecesoftrashlikewaterbottlesandsunglasses.

“Thesesculpturesareapowerfulreminderofourpersonalroleandglobalresponsibilityinpreservingbiodiversity(生物多样性)onlandandinthesea,”saysDennisKelly,directoroftheNationalZoo.
