FrenchnovelistJulesVerne(1828~1905)isoftencalledthefatherofsciencefictions.Althoughhewasnotagreattravelerhimself,hischaractersjourneyedtothemoon(inFromEarthtoMoon),underthesea(inTwentyThousandLeaguesUndertheSea),intoavolcano(inAJourneytotheCentreoftheEarth),aroundtheworld(inAroundtheWorldinEightyDays)andtomanyotherplaces.

JulesVernewasbornintheFrenchcityofNantesin1828.Whenhewasaboyheranawayfromhometoworkonaship.However,hisfathersoonfoundhimandbroughthimhome.Afterthathedecidedthatanyfuturetravelhedidwouldbeinbooks.In1847,hisfathersentJulestoParistostudytobealawyer,butinsteadVernedevelopedhisloveforthetheater.Eventhoughhewasbusywriting,Vernepassedhisexamsin1849withhighmarks.

WhenJulestoldhisfatherhedidnotwanttobealawyer,hisfatherwasveryangry.Hestoppedsendinghissonanymoney,soJuleshadtoearnalivingbyhiswriting.Vernehadtowriteandsellstories.HespentmanyhoursinParis’librariesstudyingbotany,appliedscienceandmanyothersubjects.Overthenextfewyearshewrotemanystoriesandplayswhichbroughthimonlyalittlemoney.Then,in1856,hemetHonorinedeViane,arich,youngwidowwithtwochildren.ThecouplemarriedthenextyearandtheironlychildMichelwasbornin1862.

Afterhismarriage,VerneworkedasabusinessmaninParis.However,hewasnotverysuccessfulathisjobandspentmostofhistimewritingbooksanddoingresearchforthenextone.In1863,hepublishedhisnovelFiveWeeksinaBalloonandinthefollowingyearhepublishedAJourneytotheCentreoftheEarthwhichbroughthimfame.Hisbooksbecamesopopularandearnedhimsomuchmoneythathewasabletoleavehisjobandworkfulltimeonhiswriting.
