FrenchnovelistJulesVerne（1828~1905）isoftencalledthefatherofsciencefictions.Althoughhewasnotagreattravelerhimself,hischaractersjourneyedtothemoon（inFromEarthtoMoon）,underthesea（inTwentyThousandLeaguesUndertheSea）,intoavolcano（inAJourneytotheCentreoftheEarth）,aroundtheworld（inAroundtheWorldinEightyDays）andtomanyotherplaces.
JulesVernewasbornintheFrenchcityofNantesin1828.Whenhewasaboyheranawayfromhometoworkonaship.However,hisfathersoonfoundhimandbroughthimhome.Afterthathedecidedthatanyfuturetravelhedidwouldbeinbooks.In1847,hisfathersentJulestoParistostudytobealawyer,butinsteadVernedevelopedhisloveforthetheater.Eventhoughhewasbusywriting,Vernepassedhisexamsin1849withhighmarks.
WhenJulestoldhisfatherhedidnotwanttobealawyer,hisfatherwasveryangry.Hestoppedsendinghissonanymoney,soJuleshadtoearnalivingbyhiswriting.Vernehadtowriteandsellstories.HespentmanyhoursinParis’librariesstudyingbotany,appliedscienceandmanyothersubjects.Overthenextfewyearshewrotemanystoriesandplayswhichbroughthimonlyalittlemoney.Then,in1856,hemetHonorinedeViane,arich,youngwidowwithtwochildren.ThecouplemarriedthenextyearandtheironlychildMichelwasbornin1862.
