Withsomanyfamousmasterpiecesonthebooklist,itisreallyaprettyhardjobtochooseonetoreadfirst.Aftermuchhesitationanddeeplythought,IfinallydecidedtoborrowGreatExpectationsfromthesmalllibrary.
GreatExpectationsisaboutlove,family,andrejectionasPipandMissHavishamhavebothbeenrejectedincertainways.Pipisaboyaround13yearsold,easytofright,andgoesthroughhislifesufferinglotsofsadness.HeisinlovewithagirlnamedEstellaandwantshertofindhislove,butforhimbeingshyandnotshowinghimselftoher,itmakesitveryhardforhim.
GreatExpectationswasthepenultimatenovelcompletedbythemostpopularnovelistofVictorianEngland,CharlesDickens.BorninKent,England,in1812toafamilyofmodestmeansbutgreatpretensions,Dickens’searlylifewasmarkedbybothhumiliationandambition.Dickensneverforgottheperiodoffinancialcrisisduringhischildhood,whenfollowinghisfather’sbankruptcy,hewastakenoutofschoolandforcedtoworkinashoepolishwarehouse.Pipmeetsanescapedconvict,Magwitch,andgiveshimfood,inanencounterthatistohauntboththeirlives.
WhenPipreceivesrichesfromamysteriousbenefactorhesnobbishlyabandonshisfriendsforLondonsocietyandhis“greatexpectations”.

Ofcourse,GreatExpectationsdidn’tletmedown,either.What’smore,thewholestructureofthenoveliswellandelaboratelydesigned.Theplotis
extremelyattractiveandfullofunexpectedtwists.Quiteafewcharactershaveadistinguishablepersonality.Moreover,thosewordsandsentencesaresobeautifulandmeaningfulthatIeventookthemdowncarefullyinmynotebook.Byreadingthemnolessthanthreetimes,Ihavelearnednotonlysomenewphrasesandsentences,butalsoaphilosophyoflife.
Amongthecharacters,whichimpressedmemostarenotPipandEstellawhoshouldberegardedastheleadingroles,butJoeandMagwitch.IfeelawfullysorrythatIwasnotbraveenoughtoreadtheoriginaleditionthatisasthickasabrick.Otherwise,ImayappreciateJoeandMagwitchmore.Yes,theyarenotthemaincharactersinthenovel.However,whattheysaidandwhattheydiddeeplytouchedme.It’sinteresting,isn’tit?
Theyarequitethe
oppositeguys.Oneisatotallygoodmanwithouttheleastbitofwickednesswhiletheotherisaprisonerwhoisbelievedtohavecommittedeveryevil.
IbelievethateveryonewhoreadsthebookistolikeJoe.Whenhetalkedabouthisheavydrinkingfatherwhohithimalot,hesaidhehadalotoflove.Facedwithhisrudewife,hewouldratherseemabitweakorfoolishthanstand
uptoherandfightforhimself.KnowingpeacockishPipwasashamedofhisuneducatedmanners,heleftsadlyandquietly.Theworldrushesonoverthestringsofthelingeringheartmakingthemusicofsadness.ButwhenhewasinformedofPip’sillness,heimmediatelycametotakegoodcareofPip.Heisalwayscontributingeverythingandrequiringnothing.SuchamanisJoe,kind,tolerantandselfless."Nothingissomildandgentleascourage,nothingsocruelandpitilessascowardice,"saysawiseauthor.
However,whydoIappreciateMagwitch,thebadguy?
Youmaywonder.Indeed,Magwitchdidalotofevilthingswhenhewasyoung.Buthowcanyoubeunmovedwhenyougettoknowthattheoldmankepthimselfgoingjustbythinkingoftheboywhooncedidhimasmallfavor?
HelosthisonlydaughterandPiphadnoparents,soheconsideredhimselfastheboy’ssecondfather,makinguphismindtohelphisdearboybecameagentleman.HedideverykindofjobandledahardlifeinAustralia.AtlasthemadeabigfortuneandpromisedhimselfthatallthemoneywouldgotoPip.HecouldhaveledabetterlifeinAustralia,butIhechosetogobacktoLondon.withthesimpleintentionofseeingPip,hewentbackattheriskofbeinghanged!

Magwitch.Helivedwiththefearofdeathallhislife.Whoshutsloveout,inturnshallbeshutoutfromlove.However,thankfully,becausePipfinallyrealizedhisgoodheart,hisendingwaspeaceful.
DickenshasPipasthewriterandfirstpersonnarratorofthisaccountofhislifesexperiences,andtheentirestoryisunderstoodtohavebeenwrittenasaretrospective,ratherthanasapresenttensenarrativeoradiaryorjournal.Still,thoughPip"knows"howalltheeventsinthestorywillturnout,heusesonlyverysubtleforeshadowingsothatwelearnofeventsonlywhenthePipinthestorydoes.Pipdoes,however,usetheperspectiveofthebitterlessonsheslearnedtocommentacidlyonvariousactionsandattitudesinhisearlierlife.
Iknowhowtofullyunderstandthisnovel,twiceisfarfromenough.Pip,Estella,MissHavisham,BiddyevenMrWemmick,everysinglecharacterhasastorythatiswellworthmyattention.IlovethisnovelsomuchthatIamdeterminedtoreadtheoriginaleditiononeday.Believeme.Butbeforethatdaycomes,IwillseethemovieGreatExpectationsfirst.
