You'reprobablynegotiatingatworksometimeswhenyoudon'tevenknowyou'redoingit.Knowinghowtonegotiatewellisakeycomponenttosuccessfullyrunningasmalloralargebusiness.Tosome,negotiatingatworkmeanssittingdownatatableanddemandingorbeingtoldtomakeconcessions—hardball*stuff.Negotiatingisn'talwaysdonewithahammerinhand.Butyoushouldbecomeabetternegotiatorifyouwanttosucceedinbusiness.

Intheartofnegotiating,factsandfiguresplayarole,butwhatmaytipthebalanceistheemotionalfactor—thepersonalstuffeveryonebringstothetable.

Howyoudealwithemotions,yourownandthoseontheotherside,makesthedifferencebetweensuccessandfailure.Goodnegotiations—inbusinessaswellasinpersonalorfamilysituations—hinge*onrespectforothers,andrespectforyourownfeelings.Toooften,peopleenterintonegotiationswiththemistakennotionofalackofpowerandself-respect,puttingthemselvesatanimmediatedisadvantage.

Affiliation.Whenyou'refeelingaloneorleftout,troublearises.Trytobuildgenuineconnectionswiththeothersideashumanbeings,notmerelyasadversaries.

Autonomy.Therecognitionthatbothyouandtheothersidearefreetoaffectormakedecisions.

Status.Competingoverstatusisadeadend.Appreciatingthestatusofbothsidesleadstothemutualrespectnecessaryforasuccessfulnegotiation:
