Thegreatquestionthatthispaperwill,butfeebly,attempttoansweris,whatisthecreativeprocess?

Thoughmuchtheoryhasaccumulated,littleisreallyknownaboutthepowerthatliesatthebottomofpoeticcreation.Itistruethatgreatpoetsandartistsproducebeautybyemployingallthepowersofpersonalityandbyfusingemotions,reason,andintuitions.Butwhatisthemagicalsynthesisthatjoinsandarrangesthesecomplexpartsintopoeticunity?

JohnL.Lowes,inhisjustlyfamous“TheRoadtoXanadu,”developedoneoftheearliestandstillgenerallyacceptableanswerstothistantalizingquestion.Imaginativecreation,heconcludes,isacomplexprocessinwhichtheconsciousandunconsciousmindsjointlyoperate.“Thereis…thedeepwellwithitschaosoffortuitouslyblendingimages;butthereislikewisetheVisionwhichseesshininginandthroughthechaosofthepotentiallinesofForm,andwiththeVision,thecontrollingWill.Whichgivestothatpotentialbeautyactuality.”

TheDeepWellistheunconsciousmindthatispeopledwiththefacts,ideas,feelingsoftheconsciousactivity.Theimaginativevision,anunconsciousactivity,shinesthroughthelandofchaos,oflightsandshadows,silentlyseekingpatternandform.Finally,theconsciousmindagain,throughWill,capturesandembodiestheideainthefinalworkofart.Inthiswayisunitybornoutofchaos.

Thoughtherecanbenoabsolutecertainty,thereisgeneralagreementthattheperiodsinthedevelopmentofacreativeworkparallel,tosomeextent,Lowes’theoryofWell,Vision,Form,andWill.Thereareatleastthreestagesinthecreativeprocess:

preparation,inspiration,work.
