TheStatueofLibertywasagiftfromthepeopleofFrancetothepeopleoftheUnitedStates.ThestatuewasmadebyaFrenchsculptornamedFredericAugusteBartholdi.TheinnersupportsystemwasdesignedbyGustaveEiffel,thesamemanwhomadethefamousEiffelTowerinParis.

Liberty,ofcourse,meansfreedom,andtheStatueofLibertywasgiventotheUnitedStatestocelebratetheone-hundredthanniversaryofindependencefromEngland.ThestatuewasbuiltinFrance,takenapartpiecebypiece,andthenrebuiltintheUnitedStates.ItwasopenedforthepubliconOctober28,1886.

Asyoumightexpect,thestatueisverybig.Visitorscanrideanelevatorfromthegroundtothebottomofthestatue.Iftheywant,theycanthenwalkup168stepstoreachtheheadofthestatuewheretheycanlookoutandenjoythebeautifulsightofthecityofNewYork.

Nooneisgladtohearthathisbodyhastobecutopenbyasurgeonandpartofittakenout.Today,however,weneedn'tworryaboutfeelingpainduringtheoperation.Thesickpersonfallsintoakindofsleep,andwhenheawakes,theoperationisfinished.Butthesehappyconditionsarefairlynew.Itisnotmanyyearssinceamanwhohadtohaveoperationfeltallitspain.

Longago,operationhadusuallytobedonewhilethesickmancouldfeeleverything.Soonafter1770,JoseptPriestleydiscoveredagaswhichisnowcalled"laughinggas".LaughinggasbecameknowninAmerica.Youngmenandwomenwenttopartiestotryit.Mostofthemspenttheirtimelaughing,butonemanataparty,HoraceWells,noticedthatpeopledidn'tseemtofeelpainwhentheywereusingthisgas.Hedecidedtomakeanexperimentonhimself.Heaskedafriendtohelphim.

Wellstooksomeofthegas,andhisfriendpulledoutoneofWell'steeth.Wellsfeltnopainatall.

Ashedidn'tknowenoughaboutlaughinggas,hegaveamanlessgasthanheshouldhave.Themancriedoutwithpainwhenhistoothwasbeingpulledout.
