NicknamedbothDictionaryJohnsonandtheGreatChamofLiterature(ChamisanarchaicwordmeaningKhan可汗),JohnsoncompiledandwrotetheDictionaryoftheEnglishLanguage,publishedin1755.HewasusuallyreferredtoasDr.Johnsonbyhiscontemporariesandlatergenerations.

Hewasequallycelebratedforhisbrilliantandwittyconversation.Hisrathergrossappearanceandmannerswereviewedtolerantly,ifnotwithacertainadmiration.
