Thetrueauthorshipof"Mary'sLittleLamb"isdisputed.AccordingtotheNewEnglandHistoricalSociety,Halewroteonlypartofthepoem,butclaimedauthorship.Regardlessoftheauthor,itseemsthatthepoemwas34byarealevent.WhenyoungMarySawyerwasfollowedtoschoolbyalambin1816,itcausedsomeproblems.AbystandernamedJohnRoulstonewroteapoemabouttheevent,then,atsomepoint,Haleherselfseemstohavehelpedwriteit.

However,ifa1916piecebyhergreat-nieceistobetrusted,Haleclaimedforthe35ofherlifethat"someotherpeoplepretendedthatsomeoneelsewrotethepoem".
