AftergraduatingfromOxford,TolkienservedinWorldWarI.In1917,whilerecoveringfromtrenchfever,hebegancomposingthemythologyforTheRings.AsaprofessorofAnglo-Saxonin1930satOxford,TolkienwaspartofaninformaldiscussiongroupcalledtheInklings,whichincludedseveralwriters.ThegroupwassoonlisteningtochaptersofTolkien’simaginativework“TheHobbit”.

HobbitwasanameTolkiencreatedforalocalpeoplethatcouldbestbedescribedashalf-sizedmembersoftheEnglishrural（乡村的）class.Hobbitsliveinhillsideholes.Oneofthem,BilboBaggins,looksfortreasureswithagroupofdwarves（侏儒）.Ontheway,hemeetsthetwisted,pitifulcreatureGollum,fromwhomheseesagoldenringthatmakestheholderinvisible.

OneofTolkien’sstudentspersuadedheremployer,publisherAllen&Unwin,tolookatadraft（草稿）.Thechairmanofthefirm,StanleyUnwin,thoughtthatthebestjudgeforachildren’sbookwouldbehisten-year-oldson.Theboyearnedashillingforreportingbackthattheadventurewasexciting,and“TheHobbit”waspublishedin1937.
