Betweenthepreparationandthework,theapprenticeshipandtheactualdealingwithataskoranart,therecomes,intheexperienceofmanyyoungmen,aperiodofuncertaintyandwanderingwhichisoftenmisunderstoodandcountedastimewasted,whenitis,infact,aperiodrichinfullandfreedevelopment.Itisasnaturalforardentandcourageousyouthtowishtoknowwhatisinlife,whatitmeans,andwhatitholdsforitschildren,asforachildtoreachforandsearchthethingsthatsurroundandattractit.Behindeveryrealworkerintheworldisarealman,andamanhasarighttoknowtheconditionsunderwhichhemustlive,andthechoicesofknowledge,power,andactivitywhichareofferedhim.Intheeducationofmanymenandwomen,therefore,therecomestheyearofwandering;theexperienceoftravelingfromknowledgetoknowledgeandfromoccupationtooccupation.Theforceswhichgotothemakingofapowerfulmancanrarelybeadjustedandblendedwithoutsomedisturbanceofrelationsandconditions.Thisdisturbanceissometimesinjurious,becauseitaffectsthemoralfoundationsuponwhichcharacterrests;andforthisreasonthesignificanceoftheexperienceinitsrelationtodevelopmentoughttobesympatheticallystudied.Thebirthoftheimaginationandofthepassions,theperceptionoftherichnessoflife,andtheconsciousnessofthepossessionofthepowertomasterandusethatwealth,createacriticalmomentinthehistoryofyouth,—amomentricherinpossibilitiesofallkindsthancomesatanylaterperiod.Agitationandfermentofsoulareinevitableinthatwonderfulmoment.Therearetimeswhenagitationisasnormalasisself-controlatotherandlesscriticaltimes.Theyearofwanderingisnotamanifestationofaimlessness,butofaspiration,andthatinitsfermentanduncertaintyyouthisoftenguidedtoandfinallypreparedforitstask.

ThePriceofPerfection

Goldmaydepreciate,stocksriseorfall,andbusinessvalueschangesoastoleavethemarketinpanic,buteverymanonthestreetorinthestoreknowsthatonevalueforeverremainspermanent,unvarying,andthatischaracter.Everyotherassetmaybesweptawayandsuccessstillachievedifthisremains;everyotheraidmaybeatitsbestandfailureonlyawaithimwholacksthewealthofcharacter.Characteristhatofwhichreputationisbuttheecho,oftenmistakenandmisleading.Characteristhelast,theultimate,valueoflife.Itisthetrendofthewholebeingtowardsthebest.Itisthepassionandpowerthatholdsonetruedespiteallpersuasion.Itistheonethingworthhaving,becauseuponitallothervaluesdepend.Thisassetcomesnottoamanbyaccident.Hewhoisrichincharacter,whosesuccessinmanywaysisbuiltuponhisresourcesinthisway,doesnotjustsimplyhappentobegood,true,andsquare.Thereisapricetocharacter;itcostsmorethananyotherthing,foritisworthmorethanallotherthings.Essentiallyitneverisinherited,butalwaysacquiredbyprocessesoftenslowandtoilsomeandatgreatprice.Ifyouwouldbeperfectyoumustpaythepriceofperfection.Unlessthepassionoflifeisthisperfectionitneverwillbeyourpossession.Dreamsofidealgoodnessonlywastethehoursinwhichitmighthavebeenachieved.Nomaneverfindscharacterinhissleep.Theeducationoftheheartisathingevenmoredefinitethantheeducationofthehead.Theschoolofcharacterhasaninfinitevarietyofcoursesandanunendingcurriculum.Thisdoesnotmeanthatthisprizeofeternityfallsonlytothosewhodevotethemselveswhollytoself-culture,tothesalvationoftheirownsouls.Thebestliveshavethoughtlittleofthemselves,buttheyhavelivedfortheendsofthesoul,tohelpmentobetterliving,tosavethemfromthethingsthatblightanddamnthesoul.LiketheLeaderofmentheyhavefoundthelifeunendingbylayingdowntheirlives,payingthefullprice,sellingallinorderthatrightandtruthandhonorandpurity,loveandkindnessandjusticemightremaintoman.

ThreePassionsIHaveLivedfor

Threepassions,simplebutoverwhelminglystrong,havegovernedmylife:

thelongingforlove,thesearchforknowledge,andunbearablepityforthesufferingofmankind.Thesepassions,likegreatwinds,haveblownmehitherandthither,inawaywardcourseoveradeepoceanofanguish,reachingtotheveryvergeofdespair.Ihavesoughtlove,first,becauseitbringsecstasy—ecstasysogreatthatIwouldoftenhavesacrificedalltherestofmylifeforafewhoursforthisjoy.Ihavesoughtit,next,becauseitrelievesloneliness—thatterriblelonelinessinwhichoneshiveringconsciousnesslooksovertherimoftheworldintothecoldunfathomablelifelessabyss.Ihavesoughtit,finally,becauseintheunionofloveIhaveseen,inamysticminiature,theprefiguringvisionoftheheaventhatsaintsandpoetshaveimagined.ThisiswhatIsought,andthoughitmightseemtoogoodforhumanlife,thisiswhat—atlast—Ihavefound.WithequalpassionIhavesoughtknowledge.Ihavewishedtounderstandtheheartsofmen.Ihavewishedtoknowwhythestarsshine...Alittleofthis,butnotmuch,Ihaveachieved.Loveandknowledge,sofarastheywerepossible,ledupwardtowardtheheavens.Butalwayspitybroughtmebacktoearth.Echoesofcriesofpainreverberateinmyheart.Childreninfamine,victimstorturedbyoppressors,helplessoldpeople—ahatedburdentotheirsons,andthewholeworldofloneliness,poverty,andpainmakeamockeryofwhathumanlifeshouldbe.Ilongtoalleviatetheevil,butIcannot,andItoosuffer.Thishasbeenmylife.Ihavefounditworthliving,andwouldgladlyliveitagainifthechancewereofferedme.

TheBlueDays

Everybodyhasbluedays.Thesearemiserabledayswhenyoufeellousy,grumpy,lonely,andutterlyexhausted.Dayswhenyoufeelsmallandinsignificant,wheneverythingseemsjustoutofreach.Youcan’trisetotheoccasion.Justgettingstartedseemsimpossible.Onbluedaysyoucanbecomeparanoidthateveryoneisouttogetyou.Thisisnotalwayssuchabadthing.Youfeelfrustratedandanxious,whichcaninduceanail-bitingfrenzythatcanescalateintoatriple-chocolate-mud-cake-eatingfrenzyinablinkofaneye!

Onbluedaysyoufeellikeyou’refloatinginanoceanofsadness.You’reabouttoburstintotearsatanymomentandyoudon’tevenknowwhy.Ultimately,youfeellikeyou’rewanderingthroughlifewithoutpurpose.You’renotsurehowmuchlongeryoucanhangon,andyoufeellikeshouting,“Willsomeonepleaseshootme!

”Itdoesn’ttakemuchtobringonablueday.Youmightjustwakeupnotfeelingorlookingyourbest,findsomenewwrinkles,putonalittleweight,orgetahugepimpleonyournose.Youcouldforgetyourdate’snameorhaveanembarrassingphotographpublished.Youmightgetdumped,divorced,orfired,makeafoolofyourselfinpublic,beafflictedwithademeaningnickname,orjusthaveaplainoldbad-hairday.Maybeworkisapaininthebutt.You’reundermajorpressuretofillsomeoneelse’sshoes,yourbossispickingonyou,andeveryoneintheofficeisdrivingyoucrazy.Youmighthaveasplittingheadache,oraslippeddish,badbreath,atoothache,chronicgas,drylips,oranastyingrowntoenail.Whateverthereason,you’reconvincedthatsomeoneuptheredoesn’tlikeyou.Ohwhattodo,whattodo?
