PaintingsfoundonthewallsandceilingsofancientKoreantombsin-dicatethattaekwondo,orsomethingsimilartoit,hasbeenpracticedinKoreasinceabout50B.C.Also,recordsofaspeciallytrainedgroupofyoungwarriorscalledHwarangexplainhowtheseyoungmenweretaughttaekkyon(anearlyformoftaekwondo)alongwithhistory,philosophy,ethics,archery,riding,andswordfighting.MembersoftheHwarangwerealsoencouragedtotravelthroughoutKoreainordertolearnaboutthepeoplewholivedinallregionsofthecountry.ThishelpedspreadthepracticeoftaekkyonthroughoutKorea.Eventuallytaekkyon,whichwaspracticedforexerciseandsportwasreplacedbysubak,anothermartialart.Thepurposeofsubakwasspecificallyfighting,somembersofthemilitarywererequiredtolearnit.However,people'sinterestinsubakdiedoutovertime.Bythe1800s,fewKoreansactuallypracticedsubak.AfterKoreawasinvadedin1909,authoritiesputanendtothepracticeofallmartialartsinthecountry.Inthelongrun,thisbanactuallyledtoincreasedinterestinmartialarts,andsecretgroupsbegantopracticesubakagainintheBuddhisttempleshiddenhighinthemountainsinKorea.AfterKoreagaineditsindependenceagainin1948,interestinmanyformsofmartialartsgrewaroundthecountry.TheKoreanTaeKwonDoAssociationwasformedin1961,andthiswasfollowedbytheWorldTaeKwonDoFederationin1973.

Today,taekwondoenjoysgreatpopularityaroundtheworld.Morethan20millionpeoplepracticetaekwondoinmorethan120countries.Taekwondowasalsomadeanofficialdemonstrationsportinthe1988OlympicGamesinSeoul,Korea.
