Overthelasthalfcenturythepaceofchangeinthelifeofhumanbeingshasincreasedbeyondourwildestexperience.Thishasbeendrivenbytechnologicalandscientificbreakthroughsthatarechangingthewholewayweviewtheworldonanalmostdailybasis.Thismeansthatchangeisnotalwaysapersonaloption,butaninescapablefactoflife,andweneedtoconstantlyadapttokeeppacewithit.

Thosepeoplewhobelievetheyhaveachievedsomesecuritybydoingthesame,familiarthingsareresistingchangethemselves,theycannotstoptheworldaroundthemfromchanging.Soonerorlatertheywillfindthatthefamiliarjobsnolongerexist,orthatthe'safe'patternsofbehaviourarenolongerappropriate.

However,reachingtheconclusionthatchangeisinevitableisnotthesameasassumingthat'changeisalwaysforthebetter'.Unfortunately,itisnotalwaysthecasethatnewthingsarepromotedbecausetheyhavegoodimpactsforthemajorityofpeople.Alotofinnovationsaremadewiththeaimofmakingmoneyforafew.Thisisbecauseitistherichandpowerfulpeopleinoursocietywhoareabletoimposechanges(suchasinworkingconditionsorpropertydevelopments)thatareintheirowninterests.

Inconclusion,Iwouldsaythatchangecanbestimulatingandenergisingforindividualswhentheypursueitthemselves,butthatallchange,includingthatwhichisimposedonpeople,doesnotnecessarilyhavegoodoutcomes.

Ofcourse,factorssuchaslovingrelationships,goodhealth,theskillstoearnalivingandapeacefulenvironmentallcontributetoourhappinesstoo.Butthisdoesnotmeanthatpeoplewithouttheseconditionscannotbehappy.

Overall,Ithinkanabilitytokeepclearperspectivesinlifeisamoreessentialfactorinachievinghappiness.BythatImeananabilitytohaveaclearsenseofwhatisimportantinourlives(thewelfareofourfamilies,thequalityofourrelationships,makingotherpeoplehappy,etc.)andwhatisnot(aproblematwork,gettingannoyedabouttrivialthings,etc.).
