Life:

Hewasthe3rdpresidentoftheU.S.(1801-1809).

Duringhistwoterms,heauthorizedtheLouisianaPurchase.

AfterheleftthepresidencyhewasprimarilyinterestedintheUniversityofVirginia.Hisdesignsforhishome,Monticello,andfortheVirginiastatecapitolandpartofWashington,D.C.stimulatedtheclassicalrevivalinU.S.architecture.Hispapersarebeingpublishedinaprojected60-volumeedition(1950-).

“DeclarationofIndependence”:

Jefferson’sgreatmonumentinliteratureandpoliticaltheory.

Formalproclamationofthe13colonies,announcingtheirseparationfromGreatBritain,wasadoptedJuly4;1776.TheactualwritingwasdonebyJefferson,althoughcorrectionsweremadebyFranklin,Adams,andtheCongressatlarge.
