Theresultsshowedaveryclearlinkbetweensocialmediauseandincreasedlevelsofdepressionandloneliness."Usinglesssocialmediathanyounormallydowouldleadtosignificantdecreasesinbothdepressionandloneliness,"Huntsaid.
SocialmediainviteswhatHuntcalls"downwardsocialcomparison.""Whenyou'reonline,itcansometimesseemthateveryoneelseiscoolerandhavingmorefunandincludedinmorethingsandyou'releftout,"Huntsaid.Andthat'sjustgenerallydiscouraging."Everyminuteyouspendonlineisaminuteyouarenotdoingyourworkornotmeetingafriendfordinnerorhavingadeepconversationwithyourroommate."Andthesereallifeactivitiesaretheonesthatcanencourageself-esteemandself-worth,Huntadded.
