Originally,theOrientExpresswasthenameofalong-distancepassengertrainestablishedin1883thatusedvariousroutes.ItsfirstformaljourneystartedonOctober4,1883whenthetrainsetoutfromParistoIstanbul,goingthroughsixcountries.Manyjournaliststraveledaboardtopubliclymarvelatthetrain'slufacilitiesandbeautifulenvironment.Aboardthetrain,theenchantedpassengersfeltasthoughtheyhadenteredoneofEurope'sfinesthotels;theyadmiredtteheelabora

woodenpaneling,deluxeleatherarmchairs,softsilkbedsheetsandwoolblankets.

TheoriginalOrientExpressofferedregularinternationalrailwayservice,butbecauseofitspassengers,whowereoftendiplomats,royalty,orgovernmentcouriers,anditsfive-courseFrenchmeals,thenamehasbecomesynonymouswithintrigueandluxurytravel.ItbecamethetrainofchoiceforEurope'rsichandhigh-class,andarollingsymboloftheeconomiccontrastsofitsage.Itcametobecalled“theKingofTrainsandtheTrainofKings.”

In1977,havingoperatedfornearlyacentury,theOrientExpressservicewasterminated.ItwasimmediatelyreplacedbyanovernightservicefromParistoViennathatranfortheverylasttimefromParisonJune8,2007.Sincethen,theroute,stillcalledthe“OrientExpresstarte”df,romStrasbourginsteadandwasmuchshorter.

On14December2009,theOrientExpressceaseditsoperationandthefamousroutedisappearedcompletelyfromEuropeanrailwaytimetables,becomingthevictimofhigh-speedtrainsandbudgetairlines.

TheQueenofCrime

AgathaChristie(1890-1976)wasanhighlypopularBritishauthorandplaywrightbestknownforhermurdermysteryanddetectivefiction.Shewasveryprolific,whowriteanamazingamountofworkinherlifetime,hassoldovertwobillionbooksaroundtheworldandhasbeentranslatedintoatleast103languages.Sheisbestrememberedforher80detectivenovels.Herworks,especiallythosefeaturingdetectivesHerculePoirotandMissJaneMarple,haveearnedherthetitle“the

AgathaChristiewrotemorethan30novelsfeaturingPoirot.AmongthemostfamouswereTheMurderofRogerAckroyd(1926),MurderontheOrientExpress(1934),andDeathontheNile(1937).AgathaChristie'slastpublishednovel,Sleeping

Murder,featuredherotherworld-famousdetective,theshrewdlyinquisitiveMissJaneMarple.MissMarpleappearsintwelvenovels,andtwentyshortstories.BothPoirotandMarplehavebeenwidelydramatizedinfeaturefilmsandtelevisionseries.MurderontheOrientExpress(1974),WitnessfortheProsecution(1957),AndThenThereWereNone(1945),andDeathontheNile(1978)aresomeofthesuccessfulfilmsbasedonherfiction.Withoveronehundrednovelsandoveronehundredtranslationsintoforeignlanguages,AgathaChristiebecamethebest-sellingEnglishnovelistofalltimebythetimeofherdeath.Althoughhernovelswereinthecrimefictiongenre,theirbreadthofthemesisquitediverseandextraordinary.ThismakesAgathaChristieoneofthebest-lovedwritersofalltime.

IronCurtain

“IronCurtain”wasusedtodefinetheboundarythatseparatedtheWwarPsact

countriesfromtheNATOcountriesfromabout1945untiltheendoftheColdWarin1991.Itwasasymbolofthemilitary,politicalandideologicalboundarysplittingEuropeintotwoseparateregions.TotheeastoftheIronCurtainwerethecountriesthatwereundertheinfluenceoftheformerSovietUnion.ThisincludedpartofGermany(EastGermany),Czechoslovakia,Poland,Hungary,Bulgaria,Romania,andAlbania.TheothercountriestothewestoftheIronCurtainhadmarketeconomies,andwiththeexceptionofsomeperiodsofdictatorshipinSpain,PortugalandGreece,wereruledbydemocraticgovernments.

Physically,theIronCurtaintooktheshapeofborderdefensesbetweenthecountriesofWesternandEasternEurope,andtheBerlinWall,whichwaserectedbytheSovietsin1961,gavethislongtimesymboloftheCurtainsomephysicalpresence.
