SusanSchme,aseniorlectureratDelftInstituteforWaterEducation,whichleadstheWPS,explainspredictingthesetypesofconflictsisn’tassimpleasitmightfirstappear.Itisn’tsimplyacaseofconflictsincreasingeverytimeawatersecurityincidentoccurs.Severalregionalandculturalfactorsalsoplayapart,makingpredictiondifficult.

Theresearcherstest-rantheAItoolinMali.Theyfoundthatitpredictedmorethanthree-quartersofthewater-relatedconflictsthere.Toachievethis,thesystemisfedwithavarietyofdata.“Firstthere’sthenaturalsideofthings—sorainfalldata,soilmoistureandmanyothernaturalfactors,”explainsSchme.Thisenablesittoidentifyareaswhereavailabilityofwaterislikelytobecomeaconcern.

“Thenwealsolookatvulnerabilityintermsofsocio-economicandpoliticaldevelopments—anythingfromaregimetypetothestateofdevelopmentinaregion,”sheadds.Thisadditionalinformationisweigheduptodeterminewhetheritincreasesordecreasesthechanceofconflict.Otherfactorsmightincludewhetherthewaterinsecurityislikelytoaffectcrops.

ThetoolisjustonepartofawiderWPSprojectthataimstoincreasetheavailabilityofinformationwhichcouldhelpavoidwater-relatedconflicts.OnceartificialintelligencehasmadeitspredictionstheWPSresearchersuseotheranalyticaltoolstozoom-inonacertainregionandfindoutexactlywhat’sdrivingwaterinsecurity.Thismightbedecreasedrainfall,increasedpopulation,orwatermightbebeingdivertedawayfromacommunity.
