TwelveyearoldAmirisdesperatetowintheapprovalofhisfatherBaba,oneoftherichestandmostrespectedmerchantsinKabul.Hehasfailedtodosothroughacademiaorbrawn,buttheoneareawheretheyconnectistheannualkitefightingtournament.Amirisdeterminednotjusttowinthecompetitionbuttorunthelastkiteandbringithometriumphantly,toprovetohisfatherthathehasthemakingsofaman.HisloyalfriendHassanisthebestkiterunnerthatAmirhaseverseen,andhepromisestohelphim-forHassanalwayshelpsAmiroutoftrouble.ButHassanisaShi’aMuslimandthisis1970sAfghanistan.HassanistauntedandjeeredatbyAmir’sschoolfriends;heismerelyaservantlivinginashackatthebackofAmir’shouse.SowhydoesAmirfeelsuchenvytowardshisfriend?

Iamconvincedthatfewbooksareasgoodasthisone.Tobehonest,Ihadn’tmaintainedthatthisbookwouldappealmebeforeIreadit.However,Iwasabsorbedinthebookfromthefirstchaptertothelastone.Whythisbookhasappealedtomethatmuch?
Iaskedmyself.Thisbookisnotmytypeofreadingforonlyromanticbookscoulddrawmyattentionsuccessfully.ThenIcameintoaconclusionthatitisthefriendshipandfamilyshipfascinatedme.
Totheworldyouareoneperson,buttothepersonwholovesyou,youaretheworld.AmirwasHassan’sworld.Amir’snamehadbeenthefirstwordHassanspoke.HassanthreatenedbrutalAssefforthesakeofAmir.HassanneverfailedtorunthekitetopleaseAmir.HassansacrificedhimselfforAmir’shouse.Thesearemorethanafriendwoulddo.OnlythosewholovesyousomuchcouldchallengehimselftodowhatHassandidtoHassan,Amirwasnotonlyamerefriendbutabrother.HelovedAmirmorethananythingelse.EvenafterAmirbetrayedhim,hestilltoldhissonproudly”AganAmirismybestfriend”.MaybeforHassan“foryou,athousandtimesover”hasanothermeaning,whichisnotjustkiterunningforAmirbuthewilldoanythingforAmir.
IfHassancouldbedescribedasanangel,thenAmirwasjustaperson.IdidhateAmirforhewatchedHassanberapedanddidnothing,forhemadeHassanleavehisborn-place,forheaimedHassanwithfruit(eventhoughheactuallytriedtomakehimselfgetpunished)。
Amirdidn’tdeservewhatHassandidtohim.IthoughthismeannesscausedHassan’stragedy.ButafterIfinishedthebook,IrealizeditisnotHassan’stragedy,itisAmir’s.ForwhathehaddonetoHassan,hehadledalivewithregretandsufferedendlesssleeplessnights.HisgoingbacktoAfghanistanisnotonlyajourneyphysicallybutajourneytoatonement.Hassan’sson,hisnephewsaved,Amir’ssinwasfinallywashed.Likethelifeofcircle,AmirrankiteforhismiserableHassandidtohim,hesaid“foryou,athousandtimesover”tothebookdoesn’tgiveusanaccurateendingwhetherSohrabcameintolifeagain.Iamsurelovecancureeverything.OnlywhenSohrablivesahappylifeasHassanhopedcanAmir’ssinwashedup.
ThefriendshipbetweenHassanandAmirmovedme.IbelieveAllthepeoplewhoreaditisgoingtobetouchedjustasIam.Thisbookdoesmakemethinkthegoodandthebad,what’swrongandwhat’sright,thecrueltyofwar.Fewbookscanexertaninfluenceonpeoplenowadays,thisbooksuredoes.
