ADecember2012studybyGreggL.FuriepublishedintheAmericanJournalofPreventiveMedicine,saysthatabout25percentofAmericansparticipateinactivetransportation.Activetransportationisdefinedashuman-poweredtransportation,suchaswalkingorbiking.TheresultsofthestudyshowedthatthosewhoparticipatedinactivetransportationhadalowerBMIlowerwaistcircumference,andloweroddsofdevelopinghypertensionanddiabetes.

The"VitalSignsWalkingAmongAdults"studybytheCentersforDiseaseControlandPreventionencouragesadultstogetatleast150minutesperweekofmoderate-intensityaerobicactivity.However,abouthalfofalladultsdonotgettherecommendedamountofexercise,andaboutone-thirdreportednophysicalactivityatallThestudyalsoshowedthatwalkerswerethreetimesmorelikelytomeettherecommendedamountofexercisethannon-walkers.

Inadditiontothehealthbenefitsassociatedwithactivetransportation,therearemanylessobviousbenefitsaswell.TheAmericanAutomobileAssociation’s(AAA)annual"YourDrivingCosts"studyfor2012revealedthattheaverageannualcostforowningandoperatingasedanis$8,946.Comparedwithessentiallycost-freefoottravelorthe$120annualcostofowningabicycle,choosingactivetransportationsavesyoumoney.

Walkingisaneasilyaccessibleactivitythatcanbedoneanywhereanytimewithanyone.Byimplementingwalkingasaprimaryformofcommuting,peoplecanincreasetheirhealthanddecreasetheirspending.  Participatinginhuman-poweredtransportationalsoremovessomeofthestressesofdrivingfrompeople’slives.Bywalking,peoplecanavoidtrafficcongestion,stopsigns,androadrage.Realistically,walkingtoworkcouldnotonlybemorebeneficial,butalsomorepracticalthandriving.
