Everystatereported above-averageannualtemperatures.ThewarmingwasparticularlypronouncedacrossmostoftheeasternhalfofthecountryinDecember,whenmanyplacessawtemperatures30degreesabovenormalandmanyrecordswereset. 

ThismirroredchangesseenintheArcticthatmonth,whentemperaturesspikedto50degreesabovenormal.PartofthiswarmingwasdrivenbyastrongElNiño,orperiodicwarminginthePacificOcean,butsomeofitcanalsobeattributedtoglobalwarming,saysmeteorologistEricHolthaus,whowasnotinvolvedwiththefederalreport. 

Theanalysis comeslessthanamonthaftertheU.S.and194othercountriessignedanagreementinParistomoreaggressivelycountertheeffects ofclimatechange. 

“EvenifalltheinitialtargetsinParisaremet,we’llonlybepartofthewaytherewhenitcomestoreducingcarbonfromtheatmosphere,”saidPresidentBarackObama atthetime.Still,theagreementrepresented“aturningpoint”bysettingup“thearchitecture"fordoingso,hesaid.
