HowtoworkwithDataProtectionManager2007

AftertheinitialDPM2007deployment,whichwecanseeinthisarticleseries,wehavesetuptheprerequisitestodeployDPMandstartprotectingdata.WeshouldnowconfiguresomeDPMfeaturesthroughtheOptionssection.Inthisarticlewewillfocusonthesefeatures:

∙End-userrecovery

∙Autodiscover

∙SMTPServer

∙AlertPublishing

∙Notifications

DPMalsohasmanyotherfeatures,suchasthrottle,compression,etc.InthisarticleourfocuswillonlybethefeaturesfoundinOptions.

ConfiguringEnd-UserRecovery

End-userrecoveryallowstheend-usertousethePreviousVersiontabofasharedfolderorfiletorecoverthedatafromaprotectedcomputerwithouttheAdministratorintervention. InordertoallowuserstorecoverytheirdatathroughPreviousVersions,wehavetoextendtheActiveDirectorySchema,afterthatwecanenableitandinstalltheShadowCopyclientontheworkstations.

Firstofalllet’sprepareourActiveDirectorySchematosupporttheend-userrecoveryfeature.

1.OpentheDPMAdministratorConsole.

2.IntheActionsPaneclickonOptions.

3.ClicktheEnd-userRecoverytab.

4.IfyourActiveDirectoryhasnotbeenextendedyet,theoption“Enableend-userrecovery”willbedisabled.ToextendtheActiveDirectoryschemaclicktheConfigureActiveDirectorybutton,asshowninFigure01.

5.IntheConfigureActiveDirectoryscreen,ifyouhavepermission,clickUsecurrentcredentialsortypeinauserthatbelongstoSchemaAdminsandDomainAdminsgroups.AfterthatclickOK.

6.Amessageboxwillappearwiththefollowingquestion:

ThispackagewillconfigureyourActiveDirectorytosupportend-userrecoveryforDataProtectionManager.Doyouwanttocontinue?

ClickYes.

7.AnothermessageboxinformingyouthattheActiveDirectoryprocessupdatewilltakeafewminuteswillappear.JustclickOK.

8.Wewillreceiveamessageboxthattheupgradewasconfiguredsuccessfully,asshowninFigure02.

Now,weareabletochecktheoption“Enableend-userrecovery”thatwillallowend-userstorecovertheirdata.（Figure03）

Thenextstepmustbedoneclientside;wehavetoinstallaShadowCopyclientversionthatsupportsDPM2007,ifyoualreadyhavetheShadowCopyinstalledmakesurethatitsupportsDPM2007.ShadowCopyclientrunsonWindows2000SP3orlaterandWindowsXPProfessional.TheshadowcopyclientcanbefoundonTechNet.WecanuseSMSoranotherdistributionsoftwaremethodinordertomakeitavailabletoallworkstationsoritcanbedonemanually.

BeforestartingtousethePreviousVersiontab,wemustmakesureofthefollowing:

∙ThereisnoShadowCopyenabledontheSharedFoldersoftheprotectedcomputer.IfacomputerhasShadowCopythisinformationwillbeshowntotheclientinthePreviousVersiontabnottheDPMprotecteddata.

∙WaitforasynchronizationbeforestartingtousethePreviousVersionontheclient.

Finally,wecanvalidatethatthefeatureworks,usingaclientwithShadowCopysupportedbyDPM2007.Right-clickonaSharedFolder,andclickProperties,andthenclickthePreviousVersiontab（Figure04）.TheresultwillbealltheRecoveryPointsavailableforthissharedfolder.Youcanalsousetheoptions:

view,copyandrestore.

Wecanalsoworkatfilelevel;inFigure05wecanseethataspecificfilehastwoolderversionsthatcanberestoredeasilybytheclient.

TheAutoDiscoverytaballowsustochoosethetimeofdayDPMrunstheAutodiscoverserviceandaddthenewserversontheAgentinstallationlist.BydefaultAutoDiscoveryrunsat01:

WhenAutoDiscoveryisonyoucanvalidatenewserversbyclickingInstallAgents（Figure07）.Allnewserversandcurrentserverswithouttheagentinstalledwillbeaddedtothatlist.

ConfiguringtheSMTPServer

DPMusesanSMTPservertosendreportsandnotifications.WecanconfiguretheSMTPServerasfollows:

1.OpentheDPMAdministratorConsole.

2.IntheActionsPane,clickonOptions.

3.ClickontheSMTPServertab（Figure08）.

WehavetoaddourExchangeServernameorIPaddress,port（Defaultportis25）andthee-mailaddressthatallmessagesfromDPMwillhaveintheFrom:

field.

IfwearegoingtosendmessagesfromDPMtointernalusersonlyandifwearerunningExchangeServer2003,authenticationmightnotbenecessary.However,ifweareusingExchangeServer2007authenticationisnecessary.

Note:

IfyouarerunningExchangeServer2007withdistributedserverroles,filltheSMTPServerNamefieldwiththeserverthatincludestheHubTransportrole.

4.AtestcanbedoneclickingonSendTestE-mail...

5.AmessageboxaskingaboutanSMTPaddresswillappear.TypeinaninternalvalidSMTPAddressandclickonSend.IfthereisacredentialerroryouwillreceiveamessageintheSMTPaddressspecifiedpreviously.

6.TheresultexpectedisamessagewiththeSMTPaddressspecifiedinthelaststep,asshowninFigure09.Thismessagewillhaveabriefexplanationaboutthetestthatwascarriedout.

NowwecanconfigurereportsandAlertnotificationstobesentbySMTP.

ConfiguringDPMtosupportMOM

DPMcanbemonitoredinthreedifferentways:

∙UsingtheDPMAdministratorConsolewecanmonitorJobandAlertstatus.

∙UsingtheAlertNotificationOptiontosendinformationtoaspecificSMTPaddress.

∙UsingMicrosoftOperationsManager2005orSystemCenterOperations Manager tomonitortheDPMserver.

WecanmonitorDPMusingtheNotificationstabwhichallowsustoreceivespecifiedtypesofmessagesinoneormultiplemailboxesdefinedbytheDPMAdministrator.ToconfiguretheNotificationsoption,wemustmakesurethatSMTPServerisconfiguredproperly.Ifitis,wecancontinue:

1.OpentheDPMAdministratorConsole.

2.IntheActionsPanel,clickOptions.

3.ClicktheNotificationstab（Figure10）.

4.Wecanselectwhichalerttypeswewanttoreceive.YoucansendnotificationsforCritical,WarningandInformationalalerts.Wehavetodefinethee-mailaddressthatwillreceivethenotifications.

IfthereiseitherMOM（MicrosoftOperationsManager）orSCOM（SystemCenterOperationsManager）installedwecandownloadtheManagementPackforDPM2007andinstallitonMOM.ThenextprocesswouldbeinstallingaMOMagentontheDPMServer.

EvenwiththeDPMManagementPackandtheagentinstalledontheDPMServer,wemustpublishtheDPMAlertsintheEventViewer（Figure12）toenableMOMtomonitortheDPMServer.Toenableit,clicktheAlertPublishingtabandclickPublishActiveAlerts.

Conclusion

InthisarticlewewentoverDPM2007Options.SomeofoptionscoveredinthisarticlearedisabledbydefaultandweshouldconsiderconfiguringthemassoonaswecompleteDPMDeployment.
