ThemostimportantfeatureofGADisthatpeopleexperiencequitesevereanxietyandworryaboutawiderangeofthingsoverlongperiodsoftime.Othersymptomsincludefindingitdifficulttocontroltheworry,gettingeasilytired,difficultyconcentratingandsleepdisturbance.
PeoplewithGADtendtoworryaboutthesamekindsofthingsaspeoplewithoutGAD—onlytheyfallintoworryingmoreeasilyandtendtospendmoretimeworrying.Researchsuggeststhatourworrytendstoclusteraroundparticularthemesincludingourhealth,finances,relationships,family,workandfinally,worryaboutworrying.
Someworriesarerealistic(“realevent”worries).Forexample,ifIworryaboutthesizeofmycreditcardbill,thenthisproblemexistsandmyworryarisesfromarealproblem.Someworriesareaboutthingsthatmayneverhappen(“hypotheticalevent”worries).Sometimes,realeventworriesspiral(螺旋形上升)intohypotheticaleventworries.Forexample,“Myneighborsarenoisy”couldspiralinto“I’llneverbeabletosellthehouse.I’llbestuckhereforever.”
