Iknowthatformanyofyou,todayisthefirstdayofforthosesofyouinkindengraten,orstartingmiddleorhighschool,isyoufirstdayinanewschool,soisunderstandableifyouarealittleimaginetherearesomeseniorsouttherewhoarefellingprettygoodrightnow,withjustonemoreyeartogo.andnomattergradeyouarein,someofyouareprobablywishingitwerestillsumerandyoucouldhavestayedinbedjustalittlebitlongerthismorning.
Iknowthatfelling,whenIwasyoung,myfamilylivedlivedinindonesiaforafewmymothor,shedidn’thavethemoneytosendmewherealltheamericankidswenttoschool,butshethoughtitwasimportantformetokeepupwithanamericaneducation,soshedecidedtoteachmeextralessonsherself,Mondaythoughfirday,butshehadtogotoonlytimeshecoulddoitwasat4:

ForaslongasIcanremember,I'velovedlearningnewthingsandsolvingproblems.SowhenIsatdownatacomputerforthefirsttimeinseventhgrade,Iwashooked.It'swasaclunkyandteletypemachinethatbarelydoanythingcomparedtothecomputerwehavetoday.Butitchangedmylife.
WhenmyfriendPaulAllenandIstaredMicrosoft30yearsago,wehadavisionof"acomputeroneverydeskandineveryhome,"whichprobablysoundedalittletoooptimisticatatimewhenmostcomputerswerethesizeofrefrigerators.Butwebelievethatpersonalcomputerwouldchangetheworld.Andtheyhave.
Andafter30years,IstillinspiredbycomputersasIwasbackinseventhgrade.

LikemyfriendWarrenBuffett,IfeelparticularlyluckytodosomethingeverydayIlovetodo.Hecallsit"tap-dancingtowork".MyjobatMicrosoftisaschallengingasever,butwhatmakesme"tap-dancingtothework"iswhenweshowpeoplesomethingnew,likeacomputerthatcanrecognizeyourhandwritingoryourspeech,oronethatcanstorealifetime'sworthofphotos,andthesay:

Butforallthecoolthingsthatapersoncandowithapc,therearelotsotherwayswecanputourcreativityandintelligencetoworktoimproveourworld.Therearestillfartoomanypeopleintheworldwhosemostbasicneedsgounmet.Everyyear,forexample,millionsofpeoplediefromdiseasesthatareeasytopreventortreatinthedevelopedworld.

Unhappily,Ipossessneitherthateloquenceofdiction,thatpoetryofimagination,northatbrillianceofmetaphortotellyouallthattheymean.Theunbelieverswillsaytheyarebutwords,butaslogan,butaflamboyantphrase.Everypedant,everydemagogue,everycynic,everyhypocrite,everytroublemaker,andIamsorrytosay,someothersofanentirelydifferentcharacter,willtrytodowngradethemeventotheextentofmockeryandridicule.
