”itmeantthattheriverwas“twomarksdeep”there,thatistosay,sixfeetdeep(“Twain”isanoldformofthework“Two”).SamuelClemensoftenheardthesewordswhenhewasyoung,andheusedthemasapennameallhislife.
DuringhisworkontheMississippihemettravelersofallkinds,andthishelpedhimagreatdealwhenhestartedtowrite.ButthenumberoftravelersbecamesmallerwhenwarstartedinAmericain1861.Manyofthegreatshipsontheriverstoppedwork.SamuelleftthenandwenttoNevadawithhisbrother,whowasatthattimeGovernorofNevada.There,nearthetownofCarson,Samuelbecameagoldminer,buthenevermademuchmoneyatthetime.Hesoonsawthatlifeinthegoldmineswasnotforhim.HealsotriedwritingforthenewspapersinNevada,andthisseemedmorehopeful.Hefoundthathecouldwrite.
HewenttoEuropein1867andvisitedFranceandItaly.In1870hemarriedOliviaLangdon,andtwoyearslaterhewasspendingnearlyallhistimewriting.Amonghisbooksishisownstory.
