Forcenturies,shipsbecameisolatedassoonastheywereoutofsightofshoresandofotherships.Thismeantthatifashipmetwithanyproblemswhileatsea,theywouldsinkwithoutanyoneknowingtheirfate.ThisisolationendedupwiththeinventionofthewirelesstelegraphandMorsecode.

By1904,manytransatlanticshipshadwirelesstelegraphonboard.Realizinganeedforawidelyrecognizeddistresscall,theletters“CQD”becamethefirstdistresscall.Butatthattimedifferentcountriesuseddifferentdistresscalls.

AttheRadioandTelegraphicConferenceheldinBerlinin1906,itwasnotedthatthereneededtobeaninternationallyagreeduponandrecognizedsignalfordistress.NolongershouldGreatBritainuse“CQD”whileGermanyused“SOE”.Aftermuchdiscussion,theletters“SOS”wereagreedupon.Althoughmanyhavelaterstatedthatthelettersstandfor“SaveOurShip”,“SaveOurSouls”or“SinkOrSwim”,itisnotwhatthestatementsmean.

AfterbeingagreeduponattheRadioandTelegraphicConference,theMorsecodesignalofthreedots,threedashes,andthenthreedots(senttogether,withoutspacing)wentintoeffectastheinternationalsignalfordistress2yearslater.TheletterswerechosenbecausetheMorsecodeofthreedots,threedashes,andthreedotswaseasytorecognizeandpeoplewereabletomakeasfewmistakesaspossiblewhensendingit.

Althoughofficiallytheinternationalsignalfordistresswas“SOS”,manypeoplestillusedtheoldsignalof“CQD”.Evenin1912,whentheTitanicbegantosink,itsradiooperatorfirstsentthe“CQD”distresssignal.Thenanotheroperatorsuggestedalsosendingthenew“SOS”signal.Ittookseveralyearsfor“SOS”toreplacetheoldsignal.
