BytheTreatyofParisof1763,whichendedthewarwiththeFrenchandtheIndians,EnglandgainedpossessionofCanadaandalltheterritoryeastoftheMississippiRiver.Frenchinfluenceonthiscontinentthuscametoanend;EnglandnowcontrolledmostofNorthAmerica.Butthewarhadbeenlongandexpensive.Englandhadmanydebts.GeorgeIII,kingofEngland,afterconsultingwithhisadvisers,decidedthattheAmericancolonists(殖民者)shouldhelppaysomeoftheexpensesofthiswar.AstandingEnglisharmyof10,000menhadbeenleftinthecolonies(殖民地)forprotectionagainsttheIndians.TheEnglishgovernmentalsofeltthatthecolonistsshouldshareintheexpensesofmaintainingthisarmy.Theresultwasaseriesofmeasures,theGrenvilleProgram,passedbyParliamentanddesignedtoraisemoneyinthecolonies.Someofthesemeasureswereacceptedbythecolonists,butoneinparticular,theStampAct,wasmetwithgreatprotest.TheStampActrequiredthatstamps,ranginginpricefromafewcentstoalmostadollar,beplacedonallnewspapers,advertisements,billsofsale,wills,legalpapers,etc.TheStampActwasoneofthecausesoftheAmericanRevolution.Itaffectedeveryone,richandpooralike.Somebusinessmenfeltthattheactwouldsurelyruintheirbusinesses.
