Bythelate1860sinAmerica,pencilswereingreatdemand.Americancompaniesbegandesigningmachinestoproducepencilsinlargenumbers.Ithelpedmeettheneedandcutthecostofpencilsby50percent.

SmithwasborninJanuary,1580.HeattendedKingEdwardVIGrammarSchoolbetween1592and1595.Hesetofftotheseaattheyoungageof16justafterhisfather’sdeath.AttheMediterraneanSea,hefoughtagainsttheOttomanTurksintheLongTurkishWar.HeisbelievedtohavekilledseveralTurkishleaders.ThiswasthereasonwhyhewasKnighted(授予爵位)bytheTransylvanianPrinceandalsogivenahorseandacoatofarmsthatshowedthreeTurks’heads.
In1606,CaptainJohnSmithjoinedtheVirginiaCompanyofLondon.Theydecidedtosetsailin3smallships.InApril1607,theEnglishfinallyarrivedatJamestown.Fourmonthslaterthefoodsourcesbecameinsufficient.Whatwasworse,manydiseasestroubledthem.BySeptemberover60peoplehaddied.
Later,in1609,lifeinJamestownbecamebetterforaperiodof3months.However,inApril,theyfoundmicehaddestroyedallthestoredcorn.ThismadeitverydifficultforSmithandhisgrouptogetfood.InMay,1609,closeto500peopleweresentthere.Yet,manyofthemcontinuedtodiefromdifferentillnesses.Onlyabout150ofthe500survivedwinter.TheVirginiaCompanycontinuedtogivehelpandsendmoresettlersinordertosupportJamestown.
In1608,duringsummer,SmithleftJamestownandwenttoexploreChesapeakeBayandsearchforfood.Hecoveredaround3,000miles.HelatersufferedaseverekneeinjuryandhadtogobacktoEngland.
