ONTHESUBJECTIVITYOFTHETRANSLATOR

ABSTRACTTranslation,whichhasalonghistory,shouldersthetasktohelppeopleofdifferent

nationstobettercommunicatewithoneanother.Ithasmadegreatcontributionstothe

economicandculturaldevelopmentofallnationsintheworld.Butthetranslator,who

istheveryundertakerofsuchagrandactivity,haslongbeentreatedunrighteously.

Mostprevioustranslationstudiesplaceemphasisonacomparisonoftheoriginal

text（OT）withthetargettext（TT）,onsuccessandfailureintheTTandontranslation

skills.AsfarasIknow,thosestudiesmostlyneglectthemostdynamicelementin

translation––thetranslator.Fortunately,withtheappearanceof―culturalturn‖in

translationinthe1970s,translationtheoristsbegantopaymoreattentiontothe

translatorandbroughthimtothefrontstageoftranslationstudies.Althoughthere

havebeensomestudiesoftranslator‘ssubjectivity,yetthetopicisfarfromexhausted.

Thatiswhythisthesisattemptstoexploreitindetail.

Inthebeginning,thisthesisputsforwardtheissueoftranslator‘ssubjectivityand

providesanswerstoseveralquestionswhichareofcrucialimportancetothe

followingpartofthethesis.Next,thethesisdemonstratestheobjectiverealityof

translator‘ssubjectivityfromfourangles.Then,itmovesontofocusuponthemajor

partofthethesis––theexertionoftranslator‘ssubjectivity.Thismainpartisfurtherdividedintothreesubdivisions––thenecessityoftheexertion,therequirementsfor

theexertion,andtheconcretemanifestationsoftheexertion.However,astheexertion

oftranslator‘ssubjectivityisnotwhollyfree,butsomewhatlimited,thethesis

explainsthemainelementsthatrestricttheexertion.Intheconclusion,theauthor

affirmsthevalueoftheestablishmentoftranslator‘ssubjectivityandpointsoutthesignificanceofthetheoryfortranslationpractice.

Abundantexampleswillbeprovidedthroughoutthethesis.Throughcontrastive

analysesofthoseexamplestheauthorattemptstoemphasizetheimportantrolethat

thetranslatorplaysintranslation.Thewriterillustratesandhighlightstheviewpoint

thatthetranslatormustgivefullplaytohissubjectivityinordertoensurethesuccess

oftranslation.Itissincerelyhopedthatthisresearchintotranslator‘ssubjectivitywill

enrichtranslationtheories,enlightentranslatorsandcontributetotheirsuccessful

work.
