DesignLimitations

Dependingonwhatkindofspringyouwanttodesign,anddependingonwhereitwillbeused,yourdesignwillbelimited:

Forallsprings:

∙Aspringunderloadisstressed.Ifyouputtoomuchstressonaspring,itsshapewilldeformanditwillnotreturntoitsoriginaldimensions.

∙Thematerialfromwhichthespringismadewillhaveaneffectonthestrengthofthespring:

itwillalsohaveaneffectonhowmuchstressthespringwillwithstand.Thesectiononspringmaterialswilltellyoumoreaboutthis.

∙Whenyouheatspringwire(whichyoualwaysdo),itmaychangeitsdimensions.Again,thesectiononmaterialswilltellyoumoreaboutthis.

Forcompressionsprings:

∙Ifthespringwillsetsolid(compressalltheway,sothatallthecoilstoucheachother)atthelimitofitstravel,thediameterofthewiretimesthenumberofcoilscannotbegreaterthanthespaceallowed,unlessyouwantthespringitselftoactasamechanicalstoptothemotion.

∙Asacompressionspringassumesaloadandshortens,thediameteroftheactivecoilswillincrease.Thisisonlyaproblemwhenthespringhastoworkinaconfinedspace.

Forextensionsprings:

∙Thereshouldbesomemechanicallimitonhowfarthespringwillextend,orthespringwillloseitsshapeandnotreturntoitsinitialconditionwithallcoilsclosed.

∙Extensionspringsoperatinginahigh-temperatureenvironmentmayhavetobecoiledextra-tight,astheheatwilltendtoweakenthespring.Thesectiononextensionspringswilltellyoumoreaboutthis.

Fortorsionsprings:

∙Whenatorsionspringsassumesaload,thediameterofthecoilbodywilldecrease.Ifthespringhassomethinginsidethecoil,itwillactasamechanicalstoptotheactionofthespring.
