㈡明孝陵
XiaolingTomboftheMingDynasty
XiaolingTombisoneofthemosthistoricalheritageinNanjing,built600yearsago,isthemausoleumofZhuYuanzhang,thefoundingemperoroftheMingDynasty.LyingatthesouthernfootofthePurpleMountain,thetombcomplexisoneofthelargestancientmausoleumsoftheemperorsinChina.
Borninapoorfamilyandlosthisparentswhenhewasachildandbecomeamonk.In1352,hejoinedtheRedTurbanArmywhichGuoZixin’sadopteddaughterandbecamethecommandinggenerallater.zhutookoverNanjingin1356,andheconqueredtherestofChinainthefollowingyears.In1368,hemadeNanjingthenationalcapticalwithanameofMingforhisdynastyandHongwuasthetitleofhisregin.
Zhubegantohavehistombbuiltin1381whenhiswifeEmpressMadied.Theconstructionofthemausoleumlasted38yearsormoreuntil1413.
Nowfollowmysteps,Themausoleumconsistsoftwomajorsections.ThefirstsectionisfromtheGatewayofDismountingHorsetotheLingxingGateattheendofSacredWay,ofwhichtheapproachis1800meterslong.Thesecondpartisthetombitself:
Historicalrecordsindicatethemausoleumhadagrandredwall,22.5kilometerslong,enclosingthewholetombarea.Thetombcomplexwasverylargewithmanysplendidbuildings.100000pineswereplantedand1000deerraisedintheparkofmausoleum.Unfortunately,thislargegroupofbuildingswasruinedbythewarsinthelateMingandearlyQingDynasties.Howeverwecanstillseetheexquisitestonecarvingsfromthestonebasesandimaginehowmagnificentitlookedlike600yearsago.ThetombgateknownasGrandGoldenGatewasatraditionalarchitectureandconnectedwiththeredwall.TheGatewayofDismountingHorselocatesabout750meterssouthfromhere.Theinscriptioncanbeseen“Alltheofficialsmustdismountfromtheirhorsebackshere”.ThisshowstheabsolutedignityofEmperorZhuYuanzhangatthattime.NorthwardsfromtheGreatGoldenGate,ahugerooflessstonetabletpavilioncanbeseen,itistheSquareCastleaslocalpeoplecallit.Itstopisgonebutthesurroundingwallsandfourarchwaysstillremain.
InancientChina,thenextenperormustbethefirstorthefirstgrandson,becausehisfirstsondiedin1392,sohisfirstgrandsonZhuYunwenbecamethesecondemperor,thenthefirstsonZhuDipraisedtheemperorandbecamethe3rdemperor,hewasactuallypraisinghimselfandpresumedhimselfastheauthorizedsuccessortoZhuYuanzhang.
