  AmongallthehistoricalandculturalattractionsinNanjing,themostfavoredhighlightisDr.SunYatsen’sMausoleum.Dr.SunYatsen’sMausoleumsitsonthesouthernslopeofthePurpleMountainintheeasternsuburbofthecity.Ittookmorethan3yearsand1.5millionsilverdollarstobuildthemausoleum.

  Dr.SunYatsenisconsideredastheforerunneroftheChinesedemocraticrevolution,thegreatpioneerofChinesedemocraticrevolution.OnOctober12,1866,Mr.Sunwasborninafarmer'sfamilyinCaihengvillageofXiangshancounty(thepresent-dayzhongshanCity),GuangdongProvince.Heputforwardthefamousguidingprinciple-drivingtheinvadersout,restoringthe

  sovereigntyofChina,establishingarepublicandequalizingthelandownershipandtheThreePeople'sPrinciples-Nationalism,DemocracyandthePeople'sLivelihood.Unfortunately,hebrokedownfromconstantoverworkandpassedawayonMarch12,1925.

  ThelocationoftheMausoleumwaschosenbyMr.Sunhimself.Hereisexactlyagoodplacetobuildamausoleum.Youmaywonder:

Mr.SunwasborninGuangdongbutdiedinBeijing.ForhiswholelifehetraveledthroughoutChinafortherevolution.WhydidhechooseNanjingasthevenueofhistomb?

Fundamentallyspeaking,thereasonhechoseZijingMountainashispermanentresting-placeistocommemoratetherevolutionof1911andtoencouragetherevolutionaries.Amongallthecontribution,youngarchitectLuYanzhi'sdesign,adesignintheshapeofabell,washighlypraisedandgainedthefirstprizeandhehimselfwasinvitedtosupervisethewholeprojectaswell.Thecrescent-shapedsquareisthebottomoftheBellofFreedom.

  Now,wearegoingoutoftheZhongshanGateanddrivingalongtheMausoleumRoad.

  Pleaselooktothesouth.Thecopperdingwithtwoloopedhandlesandtwolegsweighs5000kg.Itis4.25metershighanditsdiameteris1.23meters.Itisoneoftheconstructionformemoryofthemausoleum.Tothebell-shapedmausoleumthedingisjustlikethependulum.Itseemstoservetoalarmthewholenationbystrikingthebell.

  ㈡明孝陵

  XiaolingTomboftheMingDynasty

  XiaolingTombisoneofthemosthistoricalheritageinNanjing,built600yearsago,isthemausoleumofZhuYuanzhang,thefoundingemperoroftheMingDynasty.LyingatthesouthernfootofthePurpleMountain,thetombcomplexisoneofthelargestancientmausoleumsoftheemperorsinChina.

  Borninapoorfamilyandlosthisparentswhenhewasachildandbecomeamonk.In1352,hejoinedtheRedTurbanArmywhichGuoZixin’sadopteddaughterandbecamethecommandinggenerallater.zhutookoverNanjingin1356,andheconqueredtherestofChinainthefollowingyears.In1368,hemadeNanjingthenationalcapticalwithanameofMingforhisdynastyandHongwuasthetitleofhisregin.

  Zhubegantohavehistombbuiltin1381whenhiswifeEmpressMadied.Theconstructionofthemausoleumlasted38yearsormoreuntil1413.

  Nowfollowmysteps,Themausoleumconsistsoftwomajorsections.ThefirstsectionisfromtheGatewayofDismountingHorsetotheLingxingGateattheendofSacredWay,ofwhichtheapproachis1800meterslong.Thesecondpartisthetombitself:

Historicalrecordsindicatethemausoleumhadagrandredwall,22.5kilometerslong,enclosingthewholetombarea.Thetombcomplexwasverylargewithmanysplendidbuildings.100000pineswereplantedand1000deerraisedintheparkofmausoleum.Unfortunately,thislargegroupofbuildingswasruinedbythewarsinthelateMingandearlyQingDynasties.Howeverwecanstillseetheexquisitestonecarvingsfromthestonebasesandimaginehowmagnificentitlookedlike600yearsago.ThetombgateknownasGrandGoldenGatewasatraditionalarchitectureandconnectedwiththeredwall.TheGatewayofDismountingHorselocatesabout750meterssouthfromhere.Theinscriptioncanbeseen“Alltheofficialsmustdismountfromtheirhorsebackshere”.ThisshowstheabsolutedignityofEmperorZhuYuanzhangatthattime.NorthwardsfromtheGreatGoldenGate,ahugerooflessstonetabletpavilioncanbeseen,itistheSquareCastleaslocalpeoplecallit.Itstopisgonebutthesurroundingwallsandfourarchwaysstillremain.

  InancientChina,thenextenperormustbethefirstorthefirstgrandson,becausehisfirstsondiedin1392,sohisfirstgrandsonZhuYunwenbecamethesecondemperor,thenthefirstsonZhuDipraisedtheemperorandbecamethe3rdemperor,hewasactuallypraisinghimselfandpresumedhimselfastheauthorizedsuccessortoZhuYuanzhang.

  Behindthetabletpavilionissacredway,whichislinedonbothsideswith12pairsofgiantstoneanimalsin6kinds.
