That’swhatLauraGrierdidoneday.ThewomanwasinBwindiNationalPark,Uganda,whenshefeltobligedtostopandhelpsomeonebythesideoftheroad.Thepersoninquestionwasstandingaroundwithoutanyshoeson,andthesightconvincedGriertogiveupherownfootwear.Shehadmoreshoesathome,whilethiswomanhadneverevenwornapairbefore.

Allthissuggeststhatemployeewell-beingisarathermorecomplextopicthancanbetackledbyaprogrammedevotedtoexerciseandhealthyliving.AstudybyRANDEurope,aresearchinstitute,foundthatobviousbadhabitssuchassmokingandhighalcoholusewereinfactnotassociatedwithlowerproductivity,whileobeseworkerswerenomorelikelytotaketimeoffthananyoneelse.Thebiggestproductivityproblemswereassociatedwithlackofsleep,financialconcernsandmental-healthissues—factorsthatmaywellbedirectlylinkedtowork-relatedstress.

Itseemsreasonableforcompaniestoexpectsomelevelofeconomicreturnonanywellnessprogrammethattheyprovide.Butabetterimpactonconfidenceandenthusiasm(andthusproductivity)mightoccurifworkersfeltthattheirmanagershadarealinterestintheirwelfare.
