TherewereseveralreasonswhytheIndustrialRevolutionstartedinGreatBritainratherthaninFrance,theothergreatpoweroftheday.Inthefirstplace,Britainhadthemoneynecessarytofinancethelargerenterprises.England'ssupremacyontheseashadencouragedcommerce,andEnglishmenhadbeenamassingwealththroughtheircommerceandindustry.Thenewlyrichclassinthatcountrywerenotthearistocraticgroup,butmerchantsandbusinessmenwhowerewillingtodevotethemselvestoindustryandscientificagriculture.ThewealthofFrance,ontheotherhand,waslargelyinthehandsofthenobility,andtheywerenotwillingtodothenecessaryworktodevelopindustry.Inthesecondplace,GreatBritainhadundertakenveryearlythemanufacturingofinexpensiveandmorepracticalproductsforwhichtherewouldbeever-growingdemandfromthepeople,especiallythenewmiddleclass.Ontheotherhard,Franceproducedarticlesinthe'luxuryclass.Thesecouldneverbeturnedoutinquantitiesbecausetheydemandedindividuality.Englandwastheproducerofgoodsthatwereproducedinquantities,andifshecouldfindacheapermeansofproducingthem,hermarketswouldgrow.Soshewasreadyformethodsthatwouldmakeitpossibletomanufactureinlargequantities.Inthethirdplace,foralongtimeEnglandhadlargenumbersofsemiskilledworkers.WhenthefeudalsystembrokedowninEnglandandthemanorswereturnedtosheepraising,numbersofEnglishmenwenttothetowns.Theretheyengagedinweaving,makingshows,woodcarvingandmanyotheroccupationsthatdevelopedskills.WhentheIndustrialRevolutionbegan,thesemenwereavailablefortheworkonthenewmachines.Moreovertheywerefreemenwhocouldmovefromplacetoplaceastheneedforworkersarose.ThishadnotbeenthecaseinFrance,whichwasstillchieflyanagriculturalcountrywithpeasantsboundtotheirmastersinmanywayssotheycouldnoteasilymovetothecities.Inthefourthplace,coalwasabundantinGreatBritain,andalargeamountofthischeapfuelwasnecessaryforrunningthefactories.TherewascoalinnorthernFrance,too,butFrancewaslateintappingsuchresourcesbecausereallyeveryonedependeddirectlyorindirectlyonfarmingforhisliving.
