Withthetreegone,theroomseemedcruellybright,itswornfurnishingsexposedinalltheirshabbiness.Andtheviewfromthewindowdidn’tbearlookingat.Thetallhousenextdoor,previouslyhiddenbythetree,wasnowthere,dominatingtheoutlookwithitsunattractivepurplebricksandexternalpipes.Itseemedtohaveagreatmanyupstairswindows,allofthemwatchingthePelhams’everymovement.
