wealthandpossessionsconstrainedhumanity'snaturalstateoffreedom.Inkeepingwithhisphilosophy,hewasperfectlysatisfiedwithmakinghishomeinalargetubdiscardedfromthetempleofCybele,thegoddessofnature.Thisearthentub,calledapithos,andformerlybeenusedforholdingwineoroilforthesacrificesatthetemple.Oneday,AlexandertheGreat,conquerorofhalfthecivilizedworld,sawDiogenessittinginthistubinthesunshine.Sotheking,surroundedbyhiscountries,approachedDiogenesandsaid,"IamAlexandertheGreat."Thephilosopherrepliedrathercontemptuously,"IamDiogenes,theCynic."Alexanderthenaskedhimifhecouldhelphiminanyway."Yes,"shotbackDiogenes,"don'tstandbetweenmeandthesun."AsurprisedAlexanderthenrepliedquickly,"IfIwerenotAlexander,IwouldbeDiogenes."

IfIwereaboyagain,Iwouldpracticeperseverancemoreoften,andnevergiveupathingbecauseitwashardorinconvenient.Ifwewantlight,wemustconquerdarkness.Perseverancecansometimesequalgeniusinitsresults.“Thereareonlytwocreatures,”saysaproverb,“whocansurmountthepyramids—theeagleandthesnail.”

IfIwereaboyagain,Iwouldschoolmyselfintoahabitofattention;Iwouldletnothingcomebetweenmeandthesubjectinhand.Iwouldrememberthatagoodskaternevertriestoskateintwodirectionsatonce.Thehabitofattentionbecomespartofourlife,ifwebeginearlyenough.Ioftenheargrownuppeoplesay“Icouldnotfixmyattentiononthesermonorbook,althoughIwishedtodoso”,andthereasonis,thehabitwasnotformedinyouth.

IfIweretolivemylifeoveragain,Iwouldpaymoreattentiontothecultivationofthememory.Iwouldstrengthenthatfacultybyeverypossiblemeans,andoneverypossibleoccasion.Ittakesalittlehardworkatfirsttorememberthingsaccurately;butmemorysoonhelpsitself,andgivesverylittletrouble.Itonlyneedsearlycultivationtobecomeapower.

IfIwereaboyagain,Iwouldcultivatecourage.“Nothingissomildandgentleascourage,nothingsocruelandpitilessascowardice,”saysawiseauthor.Wetoooftenborrowtrouble,andanticipatethatmayneverappear.”Thefearofillexceedstheillwefear.”Dangerswillariseinanycareer,butpresenceofmindwilloftenconquertheworstofthem.Bepreparedforanyfate,andthereisnoharmtobefeared.

IfIwereaboyagain,Iwoulddemandofmyselfmorecourtesytowardsmycompanionsandfriends,andindeedtowardsstrangersaswell.Thesmallestcourtesiesalongtheroughroadsoflifearelikethelittlebirdsthatsingtousallwinterlong,andmakethatseasonoficeandsnowmoreendurable.Finally,insteadoftryinghardtobehappy,asifthatwerethesolepurposeoflife,Iwould,ifIwereaboyagain,Iwouldstilltryhardertomakeothershappy.

LoveYourLife

Howevermeanyourlifeis,meetitandliveit;donotshunitandcallithardnames.Itisnotsobadasyouare.Itlookspoorestwhenyouarerichest.Thefault-finderwillfindfaultsinparadise.Loveyourlife,poorasitis.Youmayperhapshavesomepleasant,thrilling,glorioushours,eveninapoor-house.Thesettingsunisreflectedfromthewindowsofthealms-houseasbrightlyasfromtherichman'sabode;thesnowmeltsbeforeitsdoorasearlyinthespring.Idonotseebutaquietmindmayliveascontentedlythere,andhaveascheeringthoughts,asinapalaceThetown'spoorseemtomeoftentolivethemostindependentlivesofany.Maybetheyaresimplygreatenoughtoreceivewithoutmisgiving.Mostthinkthattheyareabovebeingsupportedbythetown;butitoftenhappensthattheyarenotabovesupportingthemselvesbydishonestmeans,whichshouldbemoredisreputable.Cultivatepovertylikeagardenherb,likesage.Donottroubleyourselfmuchtogetnewthings,whetherclothesorfriends.Turntheold,returntothem.Thingsdonotchange;wechange.Sellyourclothesandkeepyourthoughts.
