children.AndIstudiedchilddevelopment,abuseandneglectattheYaleNew

HavenHospitalandtheChildStudyCenter.Iwasluckyenoughtoreceiveacivil

rightsinternshipwithMarianWrightEdelmanattheChildren’sDefenseFund,

whereIwenttoworkafterIgraduated.Thoseexperiencesfueledinmeapassion

toworkforthebenefitofchildren,particularlythemostvulnerable.

WhenIwasthinkingaboutrunningfortheUnitedStatesSenate-whichwas

suchanenormousdecisiontomake,oneInevercouldhavedreamedthatIwould

havebeenmakingwhenIwashereoncus-IvisitedaschoolinNewYorkCity

andImetayoungwoman,whowasastarathlete.

IwastherebecauseofBillyJeanKingpromotinganHBOspecialaboutwomen

insportscalled“Daretopete.”ItwasaboutTitleIXandhowwefinally,

thankstogovernmentaction,providedopportunitiestogirlsandwomenin

sports.

opportunityandresponsibilityaswellasmunity.AmericorpsandthePeace

Corpsexistbecauseofpoliticaldecisions.Ourair,water,landandfoodwill

becleanandsafebecauseofpoliticalchoices.Ourabilitytocurediseaseor

logontotheInterhavebeenadvancedbecauseofpoliticallydetermined

investments.EthniccleansinginKosovoendedbecauseofpoliticalleadership.

Yourparentsandgrandparentstraveledherebymeansofgovernmentbuiltand

subsidizedtransportationsystems.ManyusedGIBillsorgovernmentloans,asI

did,toattendcollege.

Now,Icould,asyoumightguess,goonandon,butthepointistoremind

usallthatgovernmentisusandeachgenerationhastostakeitsclaim.And,as

stakeholders,youwillhavetodecidewhetherornottomakethechoiceto

participate.Itishardanditis,bringingchangeinademocracy,particularly

now.There’ssomuchaboutourmoderntimesthatconspiretoloweroursights,

toweakenourvision-asindividualsandmunitiesandevennations.

Itisnotthevastconspiracyyoumayhaveheardabout;ratherit’sa

silentconspiracyofcynicismandindifferenceandalienationthatweseeevery

day,inourpopularcultureandinourprodigiousconsumerism.

AndIleavethesegraduateswiththesamemessageIhopetoleavewithmy

graduate.Daretopete.Daretocare.Daretodream.Daretolove.Practice
