Evencommercialbookstoresandonlinebooksellersseemtosupporttheideaoffreebookexchanges.“Weseethisprojectratherasasalespromotionthanascompetition，”saidElmarMuether.“Ifbooksarepresenteverywhere，ithelpsourbusiness，too.”

Sofar，theColognebookgrouphashadfewproblemswithdamageorotherproblems.Aubermannsaid，“Propaganda（宣传）istheonlykindofliteraturewedonotallowhere.”

AtanotherbookshelfintheBayenthalneighborhood，thelowershelvesarereservedforchildren’sliteratureonly.“Itisimportantthatwemakeiteasyforeveryonetoparticipateinthis‘readingcultureonthestreet’—fromoldreaderstokidstoimmigrants，”Aubermannsaid.
