ThestorycausedasensationinAmerica,andweresoonsyndicated(供许多报纸同时发表)tonewspapersallovertheworld.Scientistswereskepticalabouttheinformation,butitseemsthatnoonepointedoutthattheEdinburghJournalofSciencedidn’tactuallyexist.Therehadbeenamagazinewiththatnamebutithadcloseddownmorethantenyearsbefore.

TheSunarticleswere,ofcourse,anelaboratehoax(骗局).HerschelhadnotreallyobservedlifeontheMoon,norhadhemadeanyoftheotherastronomicaldiscoveriesthatthearticlereported.Infact,HerscheldidnotevenknowaboutthearticlesuntilhereturnedtoEnglandsometimelater.Hehadnothingtodowiththestoriesatall.

TheSunneveradmittedthatthestorieswerefake.However,afewweeksafterthepublication,theeditorwrote:
