Afewweeksago,nooneimaginedthatwe’dhaveaccomplished1whatwedidheretonight.Formostofthiscampaign,wewerefarbehind,andwealwaysknewourclimbwouldbesteep.
Butinrecordnumbers,youcameoutandspoke2upforchange.Andwithyourvoicesandyourvotes,youmadeitclearthatatthismoment—inthiselection—thereissomethinghappeninginAmerica.
ThereissomethinghappeningwhenmenandwomeninDesMoinesandDavenport,inLebanonandConcord3,comeoutinthesnowsofJanuarytowaitinlinesthatstretchblockafterblockbecausetheybelieveinwhatthiscountrycanbe.ThereissomethinghappeningwhenAmericanswhoareyounginageandinspirit—whohaveneverbeforeparticipatedinpolitics—turnoutinnumberswe’veneverseenbecausetheyknowintheirheartsthatthistimemustbedifferent.Thereissomethinghappeningwhenpeoplevotenotjustforthepartytheybelongtobutthehopestheyholdincommon—thatwhetherwearerichorpoor,blackorwhite,LatinoorAsian;whetherwehailfromIowaorNewHampshire,Nevada,orSouthCarolina,wearereadytotakethiscountryinafundamentallynewdirection.Thatiswhat’shappeninginAmericarightnow.Changeiswhat’shappeninginAmerica.
Youcanbethenewmajoritywhocanleadthisnationoutofalongpoliticaldarkness—Democrats4,independents,andRepublicanswhoaretiredofthedivisionanddistraction5thathavecloudedWashington;whoknowthatwecandisagreewithoutbeingdisagreeable;whounderstandthatifwemobilizeourvoicestochallengethemoneyandinfluencethat’sstoodinourwayandchallengeourselvestoreachforsomethingbetter,there’snoproblemwecan’tsolve—nodestinywecannotfulfill6.
OurnewAmericanmajoritycanendtheoutrage7ofunaffordable,unavailablehealthcareinourtime.Wecanbringdoctorsandpatients,workersandbusinesses,DemocratsandRepublicanstogether;andwecantellthedrugandinsuranceindustrythatwhilethey’llgetaseatatthetable,theydon’tgettobuyeverychair.Notthistime.Notnow.Ournewmajoritycanendthetaxbreaksforcorporationsthatshipourjobsoverseasandputamiddle-classtaxcutintothepocketsoftheworkingAmericanswhodeserveit.
Wecanstopsendingourchildrentoschoolswithcorridorsofshameandstartputtingthemonapathwaytosuccess.Wecanstoptalkingabouthowgreatteachersareandstartrewardingthemfortheirgreatness.Wecandothiswithournewmajority.
Wecanharnesstheingenuity8offarmersandscientists,citizensandentrepreneurs,tofreethisnationfromthetyrannyofoilandsaveourplanetfromapointofnoreturn.
AndwhenIamPresident,wewillendthiswarinIraqandbringourtroopshome;wewillfinishthejobagainstAlQaedainAfghanistan;wewillcareforourveterans;wewillrestoreourmoralstanding9intheworld;andwewillneveruse9/11asawaytoscareupvotes,becauseitisnotatactic10towinanelection,itisachallengethatshoulduniteAmericaandtheworldagainstthecommonthreatsofthetwenty-firstcentury:
terrorismandnuclearweapons;climatechangeandpoverty;genocideanddisease.
Allofthecandidatesinthisracesharethesegoals.Allhavegoodideas.Andallarepatriots11whoservethiscountryhonorably.
Butthereasonourcampaignhasalwaysbeendifferentisbecauseit’snotjustaboutwhatIwilldoasPresident,it’salsoaboutwhatyou,thepeoplewholovethiscountry,candotochangeit.That’swhytonightbelongstoyou.Itbelongstotheorganizersandthevolunteersandthestaffwhobelievedinourimprobablejourneyandralliedsomanyotherstojoin.
Weknowthebattleaheadwillbelong,butalwaysrememberthatnomatterwhatobstaclesstandinourway,nothingcanwithstandthepowerofmillionsofvoicescallingforchange.
Wehavebeentoldwecannotdothisbyachorusofcynicswhowillonlygrowlouderandmoredissonant12intheweekstocome.We’vebeenaskedtopauseforarealitycheck.We’vebeenwarnedagainstofferingthepeopleofthisnationfalsehope.
