ThefirstpartofTOEICconsistsoftwentynumberedphotographsthatareinyourtestbook.Foreachphotograph,youwillhearontheaudioprogramfoursentencesthatrefertoit.Youmustdecidewhichofthesentencesbestdescribessomethingyoucanseeineachphotograph.

Thephotographsarepicturesofordinarysituations.Aroundtwo-thirdsofthephotographsinvolveapersonorpeople;aroundone-thirdinvolveanobjectorascenewithoutpeople.

Thesentencesareshortandgrammaticallysimple.Theygenerallydealwiththemostimportantaspectsofthephotographs,butsomefocusonsmalldetailsoronobjectsorpeopleinthebackground.

Eachitemisintroducedbyastatementthattellsyoutolookatthenextnumberedphotograph.Thepacingforthispartisfast:

Thereisonlyafive-secondpausebetweenitems,andthereisnopausebetweensentences(A),(B),(C),and(D).

ThispartofTOEICconsistsofthirtyitems.Eachitemconsistsofaquestionontheaudioprogramfollowedbythreepossibleresponses(answers)tothequestion,alsoontheaudioprogram.Yourjobistodecidewhichofthesethreebestanswersthequestion.Betweeneachitemisafive-secondpause.PartIIproblemsdonotinvolveanyreadingskills;therefore,thispartisconsidereda"pure"testoflisteningskills.Yourtestbooksimplytellsyoutomarkananswerforeachproblem.

Tactics

-------

1.Therearenoanswerchoicestoconsiderbeforeorwhiletheitemisbeingread.Youshouldjustconcentrateonthequestionandthethreeresponsesontheaudioprogram,andpaynoattentiontothetestbook.

2.Trytoidentifythetypeofquestion(informationquestion,yes/noquestion,alternativequestion,andsoon).Thecorrectresponse,ofcourse,oftendependsonthetypeofquestionbeingasked.

3.Trytoeliminatedistractors.

4.Don'tmarkanansweruntilyouhaveheardallthreeresponses.Whenyouheararesponsethatyouthinkiscorrect,restyourpencilonthatovalontheanswersheet.Ifyouchangeyourmindandheararesponsethatyouthinkisbetter,moveyourpenciltothatchoice.Onceyouhaveheardallthreeresponses,marktheovalthatyourpencilisrestingon.(Thistechniquehelpsyourememberwhichchoiceyouthinkisbest.)

5.Ifyouhearallthreeresponsesandnoneofthethreeseemscorrect,takeaguessandgetreadyforthenextitem.

1.Betweeneachconversationtheirsisaneight-secondpause.Thismaynotsoundlikealongtime,butyoucanactuallyaccomplishquiteabitduringthispause.Youneedtomarktheanswerfortheitemthatyoujustheardandthenpreviewthenextitem.Previewingtheitemconsistsofreadingthequestion--thistellsyouwhattolistenfor--andofquicklylookingoverthefouranswerchoices.

2.Whilelisteningtotheconversation,keepyoureyesontheanswerchoices.Don'tcloseyoureyesorlookaway.Trytoevaluatethefourchoicesasyouairslistening.
