  TheMaoriswerefriendlytothefirstsettlers.ButsoonthenewsettlerswantedtheMaoris’land.Soin1844therewasfightingbetweenthem.Thiswasthefirstofseveralwarsbetweenthetwopeople.Thenext50yearswereverybadforMaoris.Manywerekilledinthewars.ManymorediedfromthenewdiseasesbroughtbytheBritish.In1840therewereperhaps200000Maoris.By1896thisnumberhadfallento42000.

  Bythiscenturythetwopeoplehavelivedinpeace.Formanyyearsthe“British”NewZealanderslookeddownontheMaoris.Butinrecentyearstheyhavehadequalrights,andtheMaorilanguageisoneofthelanguagesofthecountrywithEnglish.TodaythereareaboutaquarterofamillionMaoris,thatis,about9%ofthepopulation.MostofthemliveonNorthIsland.Theyhavearichcultureandagreatloveofsinginganddancing.
