GuillermoP.MurphyandSusanDudleyaretwoplantscientistsfromMcMasterUniversityinHamilton,Canada.TheydidafewexperimentswithJewelweeds,akindofflowerthatgrowsinwet,shadyspots.Theyfoundthattheflowersseemtoknowtheirownflowerfamily.Intheirexperiments,MurphyandDudleyplantedjewelweedsinpotswitheither siblings orstrangers.

Whenjewelweedswereplantedinpotswithstrangers,theplantsstartedtogrowmoreleavesthaniftheyhadbeenplantedalone.Thisresponse（反应）suggeststhatplantsarecompetingwithstrangersforsunlight,sinceaplantwithmoreleavescanreceivemorelightandmakemorefood.Jewelweedsusuallygrowintheshade,wheresunlightisnotenough.
