GuillermoP.MurphyandSusanDudleyaretwoplantscientistsfromMcMasterUniversityinHamilton,Canada.TheydidafewexperimentswithJewelweeds,akindofflowerthatgrowsinwet,shadyspots.Theyfoundthattheflowersseemtoknowtheirownflowerfamily.Intheirexperiments,MurphyandDudleyplantedjewelweedsinpotswitheither siblings orstrangers.

Whenjewelweedswereplantedinpotswithstrangers,theplantsstartedtogrowmoreleavesthaniftheyhadbeenplantedalone.Thisresponse(反应)suggeststhatplantsarecompetingwithstrangersforsunlight,sinceaplantwithmoreleavescanreceivemorelightandmakemorefood.Jewelweedsusuallygrowintheshade,wheresunlightisnotenough.

Whenjewelweedseedlings(幼苗)wereplantedwithsiblings,theygrewafewmorebranchesthantheyusuallywouldiftheywerealone–buttheydidnotstartgrowinglotsofextraleaves.Thisbehaviorsuggeststheplantsaremorelikelytoshareresources,ratherthancompete.
