Thestudylookedat13-year-oldswhoactedoldfortheiragebyhaving"cool"behavior,suchasearlyromanticrelationships.Theywereseenas"cool"andpopularkids.Butastheygrewup,thingschanged.Thestudyfoundthatthesekidstendedtohaveproblemswithdrugsandrelationshipsbytheirearly20s.Theirbehaviorwasnolongerlinkedwithpopularity.Instead,theywerethoughttobelesssociallyskilledbytheirpeers.Besides,theaverage"cool"kids,byage22,didmorepoorlythantheaveragekidsinthestudy.Theyhada45percentgreaterrateofproblemsduetodrugsandalcohol.Theyalsohada22percentgreaterrateofcriminalbehavior.Thestudyalsofoundthatthesekidsfailedtodevelopimportantlifeskills.Theyspentsomuchtimetryingtoseemcool.Theydidn'tdeveloptheskillsneededformeaningfulfriendships.Thestudyfollowed86maleand98femalemiddleschoolstudentsfora10-yearperiod.Ithassomesurprisingfindings.Inparticular,thestudynotesthattheso-called"cool"behaviorisapredictor(预示)offutureproblemswithdrugsandalcohol.Infact,itisabetterpredictorthandrugandalcoholuseinmiddleschool.However,oneconclusionofthestudyiswelcome.Researcherssaidthatparentsshouldn'tworrytoomuchiftheirkidsdon'tseemthatpopular.
