Titanicisa1997Americanromanticdramafilmdirected,written,co-producedandco-editedbyJamesCameronaboutthesinkingoftheRMSTitanic.ItstarsLeonardoDiCaprioasJackDawsonandKateWinsletasRoseDeWittBukater,twomembersofdifferentsocialclasseswhofallinloveaboardtheill-fatedmaidenvoyageoftheship.Themaincharactersandthecentrallovestoryarefictional,butsomecharacters(suchasmembersoftheship'spassengersandcrew)arebasedonrealhistoricalfigures.GloriaStuartplaystheelderlyRose,whonarratesthefilminamoderndayframingdevice.

Productionofthefilmbeganin1995,whenCameronshotfootageoftherealwreckoftheRMSTitanic.Heenvisionedthelovestoryasameanstoengagetheaudiencewiththereal-lifetragedy.ShootingtookplaceonboardtheAkademikMstislavKeldysh-whichaidedCameroninfilmingtherealwreck–forthemodernscenes,andareconstructionoftheshipwasbuiltatPlayasdeRosarito,BajaCalifornia.Cameronalsousedscalemodelsandcomputer-generatedimagerytorecreatethesinking.Titanicbecameatthetimethemostexpensivefilmevermade,costingapproximatelyUS$200millionwithfundingfromParamountPicturesand20thCenturyFox.[3]

ThefilmwasoriginallytobereleasedonJuly2,1997,butpost-productiondelayspushedbackthefilm'sreleasetoDecember19,1997.[4]Uponrelease,thefilmturnedouttobeanenormouscriticalandcommercialsuccess,winningelevenAcademyAwards,includingBestPicture.[5]Itbecamethehighest-grossingfilmofalltime,withaworldwidetotalofover$1.8billion(itisthesixth-highestgrossinginNorthAmericaonceadjustedforinflation).[6][7]

Plot

In1996,treasurehunterBrockLovett(BillPaxton)andhisteamexplorethewreckoftheRMSTitanic,searchingforanecklacesetwithavaluablebluediamondcalledtheHeartoftheOcean.TheybelievethediamondtobeinCaledon"Cal"Hockley'ssafe,whichtheyrecovereasily.However,whensearchingthesafetheydonotfindthediamond,butasketchofanudewomanwearingthefameddiamond.ThedrawingisdatedApril14,1912,thenighttheTitanichittheiceberg.One-hundred-year-oldRoseDawsonCalvert(GloriaStuart)learnsofthedrawing,andcontactsLovetttoinformhimthatsheisthewomaninthedrawing.SheandhergranddaughterElizabeth"Lizzy"Calvert(SuzyAmis)visitLovettandhisskepticalteamonhissalvageship.Whenaskedifsheknewthewhereaboutsofthenecklace,RoserecallshermemoriesaboardtheTitanic,revealingforthefirsttimethatsheisactuallyRoseDeWittBukater,apassengerbelievedtohavediedinthesinking.

In1912,theupper-class17-year-oldRose(KateWinslet)boardstheshipinSouthampton,EnglandwithherfiancéCaledon"Cal"Hockley(BillyZane),thesonofaPittsburghsteeltycoon,andhermother,RuthDeWittBukater(FrancesFisher).BothCalandRuthstresstheimportanceofRose'sengagementtoCal,sincethemarriagewillmeantheeradicationoftheDewitt-Bukaterdebts;whiletheyhavetheoutwardappearanceofbeingupper-class,Roseandhermotherareexperiencingseverefinancialtroubles.DistraughtandfrustratedbyherengagementtothecontrollingCalandthepressurehermotherisputtingonhertogothroughwiththemarriage,Roseattemptssuicidebyjumpingfromthestern.Beforesheleaps,adrifterandartistnamedJackDawson(LeonardoDiCaprio)intervenes.Initially,Cal,hisfriends,andthesailors,overhearingRose'sscreams,believeJackattemptedtorapeher.SheexplainsJacksavedherlife,hidinghersuicideattemptbyexplainingsheslippedaftertryingtoseethepropellers.Jacksupportstheclaim,althoughHockley'smanservant,formerPinkertonagentSpicerLovejoy(DavidWarner),isunconvinced.JackandRosestrikeupatentativefriendshipasshethankshimforhiscorroboration,andhesharesstoriesofhisadventurestravelingandsketching.Theirbonddeepenswhentheyleaveastuffyfirst-classformaldinneroftherapport-buildingwealthyforamuchliveliergatheringofIrishdance,musicandaleinthird-class.

CalisinformedbyLovejoyofRose'spartyinginsteerageand,duringbreakfastthefollowingmorning,flipsthetableinrageasheangrilyforbidshertomeetJackagain.However,afterwitnessingawomanencouragingherseven-year-olddaughtertobehavelikea"properlady"attea,RosedefieshimandhermotherandmeetsJackatthebowoftheship.ItistherewheretheygoupontotherailandRosefinallylearnstoletgoandopenherselfuptoJack,sharingapassionatekiss.ThecouplegotoRose'sstateroomwheresheasksJacktosketchhernudeandwearingonlytheHeartoftheOcean,anengagementpresentfromCal.Afterwards,thetwoplayfullyrunawayfromLovejoy,goingbelowdeck,intotheboilerroom,andintotheship'scargohold.TheyenterWilliamCarter'sRenaultandproceedtomakeloveinthebackseat,beforemovingtotheship'sforwardwelldeck.RosedecideswhentheyarriveinNewYork,shewillleavetheshipwithJack.Theythenwitnesstheship'sfatalcollisionwithaniceberg.Afteroverhearingtheship'slookoutsdiscussinghowseriousthecollisionis,RosetellsJacktheyshouldwarnhermotherandCal.Meanwhile,CaldiscoversRose'snudedrawingandhertauntingnoteinhissafe,soheframesJackforstealingtheHeartoftheOceanbyhavingLovejoyplantitinJack'spocket.JackisarrestedandtakendowntotheMaster-at-arms'soffice.CalslapsRoseacrossthefaceduetohisanger.Roserunsawayfromhim(spittinginhisfaceasJacktaughthertoearlier)andhermother(whoisinalifeboat)torescueJackfromimprisonment.Withhis"cell"beingatthebottomoftheshipandtheshipsinking,theofficeslowlybeginstoflood.Roseeventuallygetstohimandfreeshimwithanaxe.

JackandRosereturntothetopdeck.CalandJack,thoughenemies,bothwantRosesafe,sotheypersuadehertoboardalifeboatbyCaltellingherthathehadanarrangementwithamanworkingtheboats,andthatheandJackwouldgetoffsafely.AfterRoseisontheboatandoutofearshot,Caladmitsthattherewasanarrangement,buthewouldnotuseittohelpJack.AfterrealizingthatshecannotleaveJack,Rosejumpsbackontheshipandreuniteswithhimintheship'sfirst-classstaircase.Infuriated,CaltakesLovejoy'spistolandchasesJackandRosedownthedecksandintothefloodedfirst-classdiningsaloon.WhenCalrunsoutofammunition,hesarcasticallywishesthemwellintheirlastmomentsandthenrealizeshelefttheHeartoftheOceaninRose'sovercoat.CalabandonsLovejoyandreturnstotheboatdeck,whereheboardsCollapsibleAbypretendingtolookafteranabandonedchild,astheofficerhehadpreviouslybribedintolettinghimontoalifeboatthrowsthemoneyinhisface,tellinghimhismoneycan'tsavehimanymore.WhenJackandRosereturntothetopdeck,thelifeboatshavegoneandtheytaketemporaryrefugeonthenowverticalstern,whichwashesthemintothefreezingAtlanticOcean.JackandRosemanagetograbholdofacarvedoakdoor,whichcanonlysupportoneperson.Jacksuffersfromseverehypothermia,anddiesinRose'sarms.RoseisrescuedwhenFifthOfficerHaroldLowereturnswithLifeboat14withfiveothersurvivors.

RoseistakenbytheRMSCarpathiatoNewYork,whereshegiveshernameasRoseDawson(adoptingJack'ssurname,leadingeveryonetobelieveRoseDeWittBukaterdiedontheTitanic).ShealsoseesCalforthelasttimeonCarpathia'sdeck,lookingforher(sheexplainshelatermarried,thencommittedsuicidefollowingtheWallStreetCrashof1929,afterhelosteverything).Havingcompletedherstory,theelderlyRosegoestothesternofLovett'sship.Aftershestepsontotherailing,itisrevealedshestillhastheHeartoftheOceaninherpossession.Shedropsthediamondintothewater,sendingittojointheremainsofthemostimportanteventofherlife.ThefilmendswithashotofRoseinbed.AroundherarepicturesofherdoingeverythingshesaidshewoulddowithJackthroughoutherlife.ThefinalshotofthefilmiswheretheyoungRoseisreunitedwithJackattheGrandStaircaseoftheTitanic,surroundedandapplaudedbythosewhoperishedontheship,astheykisspassionately.
