Olderpeopletendtohave"sleepfragmentation,"meaningtheywakeupmoreoftenduringthenight,saidstudyauthorDr.JulieGammack,anassistantprofessorofmedicineintheDivisionofGeriatricMedicineatSt.LouisUniversity.

Theyalsoseemtogetless"REM"sleep,thetypeofsleepduringwhichrapideyemovementoccurs,Bloomadded.

It'sunclearwhatrolethesenaturallyoccurringchangesinsleeppatternshaveonaperson'squalityoflife,Bloomsaid."Whatisimportant,though,isthatolderpeopleoftenhaveactualsleepdisordersandproblemswithsleep,"hesaid.And,expertssay,thereisusuallymorethanonecause.
