afterfillinglaboratorybookswithpageafterpageoffailedexperiments,
Baekelandfinallydevelopedamaterialthathedubbedinhisnotebooks"Bakelite".
Thekeyturnedouttobehis"bakelizer",
aheavyironvesselthatwaspartpressurecookerandpartbasementboiler.
Withit,hewasabletocontroltheformaldehydephenolreaction
withmorefinessethanhadanyonebeforehim.
Initialheatingofthephenolandformaldehyde
（inthepresenceofanacidorbasetogetthereactiongoing）
producedashellac-likeliquidgoodforcoatingsurfaceslikeavarnish.
Furtherheatingturnedtheliquidintoapasty,gummiergood.
