BACKGROUNDART
[0002]Directaccessstoragedevices(DASD)havebecomepartofeverydaylife,andassuch,expectationsanddemandscontinuallyincreaseforbetterperformanceatlowercost.Tomeetthesedemands,themechano-electricalassemblyinaDASDdevice,specificallytheHardDiskDrive(HDD)hasevolvedtomeetthesedemands.
[0003]InorderforanHDDtoholdmoredata,advancesinthemagnetictransduceraswellasthediskmediaonwhichthedataiswrittenhaveundergonemajoradvancesinthepastfewyears.Acriticalrelationshipbetweenthemagnetictransduceranddiskisthespacingbetweentheiradjacentsurfaces.Thisistypicallyknownastheflyheight.
[0004]ThemagnetictransducerfliesproximatelytothediskbyvirtueofanairfilmcreatedbythediskspinningnexttoapatternonthesurfaceoftheHDDslider(andmagnetictransducercontainedtherewithin).ThispatternontheHDDsliderisknownastheair-bearingsurface,orABS.TheABSisfabricatedonthesurfaceofthesliderthatisclosesttothedisk.Typicallythemagnetictransducerresidesattheendofthesliderknownasthetrailingedgeoftheslider,socalledthetrailingedgebecauseitisthelastedgeoftheslidertoflyproximatelytothedisk.
[0005]Controloftheflyheightiscriticaltothedensityofdatathatcanbewrittenontothedisksurface.Oncethesliderisflyingabovethedisksurface,maintainingthedesiredflyheightiscriticaltotheoperationoftheHDD.Severalconditionscanarisethatcanchangetheflyheightoftheslider.Thefollowingexamplesarenotintendedtobeanall-inclusivelistofconditionsthatcanaffectflyheight.Thesefewexamplesarepresentedonlyforthesakeofillustration,brevityandclarity.MechanicalshockenteringtheHDDcancausetheABStobecomeunstableandloseitsabilitytoflythesliderproperly.Debriscaninteractwiththesliderandchangeitsflyheight.
