Astheworld'smostcommonmeaningofenterpriseorganizationform,thefamilybusinessintheworldeconomyhasapivotalposition.Everycountryintheworld,regardlessofdevelopedanddeveloping,Familyenterprisesareinstronggrowthandthedevelopment.KelinE.Gersickacknowledgesthatfamilyowningormanagingenterprisesaccountforbetween65%and80%intheworldenterpriseespeciallythemostconservativeestimate.Inthefortune500enterprisesworld-widethereis40percentownedormanagedbyfamily.

FamilybusinesshasbecomeasignificantforceinChineseeconomicfield.InChinafamilybusinessaccountsformorethan95percentsofChineseenterprises.

InChinafamilyenterprisefocuson20to49years,ofwhich30~49yearsoldaccountedfor74%,50yearsoldaccountedforonly5.5%.TheUnitedStatesbusinessowner’smedianageis54yearsold,29.3%businessownersovertheageof60years,41yearsoldofthefollowingaccountsforonly11.2%.

Enterprisemasterdegreedistribution

InChinaeducationoftheowneroffamilyenterprisesfocusedonhighschoolandtechnicalsecondaryschool(41.9%)andUniversity(33.5%),masteronlyaccountedfor3.2%.Thefamilybusinessownersandexecutivesintheuniversityeducationamountsto47.8%,postgraduateeducationaccountedfor20.8%inUSA,isseveraltimesthanthatinChina.

Family-runshopandfather-sonfactoryisthecommonformoffamilyenterpriseinChina.Thefamilybusinessownersinthebloodoradoptiverelationshipaccountfor79.8%,affinityrelationshipaccountfor13.9%infamilyenterpriseoftheUSA.

Familyenterpriselifecycle

Familyenterprisescanbesaidtobeanancientand“transient"ofenterpriseorganizationform.Sayingitisancient,becauseitistheformofanenterprisewithalonghistory.Sayingit“transient",becauseofthefamilybusinessinlifecycle,whichhaddevelopedsofar,hasa"rich,butthreegenerations”sustainablerule.

AccordingtoafamilyenterpriseresearchinstitutionintheUSAshowsthat,about70%ofthefamilybusinessfailedtopasstothenextgeneration,88%failedtothethirdgeneration,only3%ofthefamilybusinessinfourthgenerationandlaterstilloperating.DatashowsinChina,theaveragelifespanoffamilyenterpriseis24years,happentosamewiththeaveragelengthofserviceenterpriseauthor;30%ofthefamilybusinesscanbeinheritedtothesecondgenerationhands,howeverofwhichhavelessthan2/3oftheenterprisecanbeinheritedtothethirdgeneration,thelatterinabout13%enterprisestopassthirdgenerations.WhiletheChinesefamilyprivateenterprisecansurvivalevenlesslifecycle.Accordingtothesedata,wecaninferthatfewcansurvivalcontinuously.

Recentlymanyoffamilybusinessesfacethechallengeoftheinheritancesincethesuccessorsofthesecondgenerationaresoyoungthattheycannotdealwiththemanagementhierarchyproperly,whichalsoistheproblemtheyshouldreflect.
